then they should fix it not take it away |
Read the revised standards - what do you think of them? I think they make more sense than the current standards, ymmv. |
When I was in school, there was only part 1. There's just so much more history now. |
another poster pointed out Native Americans are proposed at different grade levels instead. Ancient China wasn’t covered when I was a kid. I don’t even remember it being covered for my kids. Why do you think it’s “kind of scary”? How in depth was the study of it? Maybe it has been absorbed elsewhere in the curriculum with less depth. |
You are an idiot How in the world can the US not teach about Native Americans Virginia you failed by electing YOUNGKIN the guy who doesn't think VA schools are good for his own kids! |
I'm not an idiot. My kids were learning things like "the Indians were not as civilized as the people who came from England, so the people who came from England helped them and the Indians were grateful." This was two years ago so I am hazy on the specifics but it was about that offensive. Wouldn't you rather have your kids learn nothing than learn that? |
PP. Social Studies teacher. Leaving Mali out is a disgrace. Older third grade standards included the Mayans too. Only learning about the Woodlands native cultures, leaves out a lot of cultures. The tie in second was weak, but at least it considered that the Powhatans are not a monolith. How many EL students are actually Mayans? How do our immigrant students (and even 3rd generation Americans) see themselves in this new plan. |
I remember when one of mine brought home worksheets describing Pocahontas as a “princess” and glorifying John Smith. They are still teaching the Disney version of Native American history. It’s wrong but I wouldn’t count on Youngkin to fix it. |
Where was this? My kids went to school in Arl and I subbed in ES for many years. I've never heard/seen it presented that way. |
That's not at all how my DCs learned it in FCPS, they're in 6th and 4th so recent. |
Mali is still in the US part 1 standards, so they will get it eventually. |
Scaryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy OMG what is going on?@$&%!? |
ACPS. I was so stunned I took a photo of the worksheet. |
Everything I’ve read on new standards seems fine and makes more sense, honestly. The gut reaction to attack it as whitewashing and racist seems in bad faith. |
Perhaps you should do more reading. They won't even issue the more specific instructional framework until next summer. They just revised the guidelines. The details are yet to come. With the caveat of its left-centrist bias, the Post's initial summation of the differences does offer some red flags and, if the actual phrases the Post uses are accurate, some notable change in obvious bias. https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2022/11/16/virginia-school-history-standards-youngkin/?fbclid=IwAR0TFW3SwUihf3wZNA6jGWbIHbBXMhB-HmtOUyzzFbtu2WrM6-kL1Rd_tVo |
