The only people who use that term in a derogatory sense are people like me who grew up in the 80s and 90s where that was a common insult in middle and high school. She's way too old to have picked up on that lingo.

That ... makes no sense whatsoever.

+1. Think about what she said. “WE cannot be so r-word”. The word was being used to describe people, not a process. And no one with any sense uses that word to describe a process when there are so many other non controversial words you can use.

I don’t know how anyone listens to or attends these meetings. Just a bunch of people who love to hear themselves talk. I deal with the types at work and nothing gets done. But everything must be talked about to death.

No. Of note is there were 2 uploads over 1 hour ago- Lemon Road and Supt. It's pushing a button so what does this delay mean? https://www.youtube.com/c/FCPSeduFCPS/videos

A notable video is A look inside FCPS’s Equitable Access to Literacy Plan and I assume the word equitable is only applicable if parents-guardians of some students provided afterschooling to achieve literacy. Long term teacher over age 50 stated that kids are doing things I would not have thought possible 5-7 years ago.

Irrespective of when someone grew up, one would typically use “delayed” to describe something being delayed (for a trivial reason or otherwise). Almost no one would use “retarded” — it’s not a common word and the primary meaning is offensive.

Per Merriam-Webster, there is no appropriate use of the word (as every definition is offensive): https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/retarded

As for

They showed this at the Dyslexia Open House and I think it is supposed to show how the new curriculum is changing to help kids with Dyslexia and other reading issues. It also seems to be bringing back spelling but note the rote spelling memorization from when I was a kid. DCUM has complained about spelling for years. I think the new curriculum is an improvement and designed to indentify kids with reading issues earlier. The video made me sad as my second and 4th graders needed this in K.

To put this in context:

There was a lengthy discussion about the "Truth in Education" resolution, where KKG didn't get her way (a less radical version of the resolution was approved).

Clearly she was unhappy. She walked away from the dais for a while. Anderson was also pouting and refused to participate in a group picture.

Then they got to the citizen participation part of the meeting. One speaker, who was focusing on recent incidents of anti-Semitism within FCPS, was at about the 1:45 mark (they each get 2 minutes) when the clerk realized the speaker was a substitute, which isn't allowed under their rules (as amended last year).

Their counsel, John Foster, made it clear they could waive their rules and let the speaker finish. Again, she only had about 15 seconds left. But then they spent over five minutes debating whether it would set a "precedent." Anyone with a brain - which at that moment clearly didn't include Sizemore-Heizer, who was presiding - would have realized they can make exceptions on an ad hoc basis and that no one would care. But instead they refused to waive the rule and let the woman finish.

In doing so, they revealed their utter hypocrisy. They spent well over an hour debating a resolution intended to show the world just how committed they are to anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion. And then a few minutes later they shut down a Jewish woman for breaking one of their silly procedural rules that wasn't even in effect until a year ago (speaker substitutions used to happen regularly).

Keys Gamarra was among those who apparently wanted to let the woman finish, and understood the time they'd spend hashing it out with Foster would be 5X the amount of time the woman would need to wrap up. Her frustration was well-founded. The word she used to describe the situation was inappropriate. And she used it just like every other person who grew up in the 1970s-2000s might have used it, until the "r-word" joined the use of acknowledged slurs.

Nice try.

This is very old slang.

People who were teens when I was a little kid in the 70s used it all the time. They would have been born in the late 50s.

It's unfortunate that this will turn into a game of "gotcha" but then ask yourself who's responsible for encouraging the whole "speech police" mindset.

Had Schultz or Wilson still been on the Board, and used such language, there's no doubt the rest of the members would be rushing to introduce a resolution to censure them.

At a minimum, KKG will need to make a formal apology at the next meeting. Nothing less will cut it.

KKG has no interest beyond black administrators, staff and students. She needs to apologize for this slur. As someone who is supposed to care for all students, it is beyond inappropriate. The board wven did a resolution last year or the year before about how this word is a slur! She knows better even if she grew up with this term like many of us did in the 70s and 80s.

The PP who described the speaker situation above was wrong. John Foster said it wild be a speaker substitution despite the power of attorney and it would require a vote to suspend the rules. The parlimentarian agreed. Why didn’t that speaker identify herself as a substitute up front? Rachna read the rules very clearly that said no speaker substitution. They needed to follow the process and that’s whay they did.

Exactly, that's why she's racist.

It could have been a quick vote to suspend the rules. Rachna is on a power trip and just as dense as the rest of them.

It's amazing how they always find new ways to embarrass themselves. Spend over an hour going on about equity and anti-racism but then insisting on blind adherence to a procedural rule. Isn't the whole point of all their DEI campaigns about the need to be generous and flexible?

She needs to resign. She’s been ineffective for five years; she regularly shows up unprepared; and she can’t handle people with different opinions.

SHE NEEDS TO BE REMOVED AND ESCORTED OUT OF THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY!

What made her think she’s allowed to say that word??!?

KKG lives along the Hunter Mill Corridor which is similar to the Georgetown Pike Corridor. Meren - Hunter Mill rep - has no merit on equity. She has Title 1 schools and Hunters Woods is in her district. Est 386.4k for one school and an extra program. How many field trips is that for Title 1 schools? Truly whacky
1:10:43 Meren -"cancel culture dismisses people's humanity. " Later "hollow ...poor way to conduct public work"

What is she talking about? What students have experienced things like genocide and the Holocaust?

KKG appears to have forgotten the Omeish 9 11 pop up amendment. KKG got this one in the morning on 10-20 and maybe got the Omeish late afternoon.

Omeish-1:31:30 "removing blockers that prevent kids from not being able to achieve..." Major blocker- literacy.

There are so many black women in this school division, from the school board to the leadership team, who seem to believe fighting for equity only means fighting for black staff and kids. You can hear it in their speech, see it on their social media, and feel it deeply through their mannerisms.

I find it really unfortunate, and as an advocate for all students, especially those from diverse backgrounds, it has turned me from an ally to a skeptic.
