How does it feel to inhabit a world made of lies? |

It’s difficult to read that article, and to think back to Sandy Hook and the GOP’s response to it, and to think of how the GOP reflexively “backs the blue” without any consideration that perhaps the police aren’t infallible, and to think of the GOP’s idiotic and bullheaded belief that any person can own any gun and as many as they want and as much ammunition as they want and not understand that the GOP is damaging the fabric of the country. |
They were cowards plain and simple. It’s Texas after all. Have a lot of folks walking around carrying very powerful weaponry all the time. If they had strong leadership and followed basic response protocol could have taken carry of it in 5 minutes or less. Nashville police did it in 4 minutes with a much smaller police response to their mass shooting event. |
| If only the "good guys" had guns! Then the little children would be safe. |

From this article. “A nationwide analysis by the news organizations shows states require far more training to prepare students and teachers for a mass shooting than they do for the police who are expected to protect them. At least 37 states have laws mandating that schools conduct active shooter-related drills. All but four of those states require them at least annually. In contrast, only Texas and Michigan have laws requiring training for all officers after they graduate from police academies. Texas’ law is the strongest in the country, mandating that officers train for 16 hours every two years. That requirement came about only after the Uvalde massacre.” Leaving it up to the babies to protect themselves. |

In a sick twist of irony, lots of cops will interpret this as an "attack on police" and have an even bigger chip on their shoulder. The culture of American policing is stuck in a negative feedback loop where deficiencies are identified and improvements are mandated, but then police interpret this as a personal "attack" and become more likely to shirk their duties. Not sure how to change this mindset but it's literally killing people. |

I would have more respect for police if they didn't support an increase in the number of armed citizens and if they didn't support AR-15s in the hands of civilians. You would think that the opposite would be true--that cops would want fewer guns on the street so that they wouldn't have to fear for their lives every time they go out on a shift. But, no, they want MORE guns under the theory that a "good guy" with a gun can help prevent mass shootings. Even though that rarely happens IRL...
Basically we're in a domestic arms race where "bad guys" and cops are equipped with more and more weapons and fear and paranoia increase. |
And then more complaints about wanting to try doing something different with some of those gigantic police budgets to maybe get better results. What did uvalde get for their investment in policing? Maybe the money would have been better spent elsewhere. |

This nation has entered a strange twilight zone where good people get terrorized by the cops; meantime municipalities are allowing criminals to get away with crime.
A tiny, skinny little woman with a child inside the school burst past the Uvalde cops to enter the school, while grown men with arsenals stood outside and beat up on the parents. She emerged from the school with her child, and many other children as well. She saved their lives. SHE'S A HERO. If I recall correctly, she was arrested for entering the school after the cops tried to prevent her from going in. Let THAT sink in. |
This is what happens in actual fascist or authoritarian states. State security forces do not protect the citizens; they protect only their clique's own privileges and their political benefactors. Criminals are emboldened because they know the state security forces are no longer protecting civilians. |
The "good guy with a gun" who killed two terrorists in the recent Jerusalem bus station attack five days ago was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers while he was kneeling on the ground with his hands up in the air. Netanyahu coldly responded to reporters about the tragic killing of the hero - "That's life." https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/04/middleeast/castleman-israel-jerusalem-hamas-shot-backlash-intl/index.html https://www.timesofisrael.com/family-says-yuval-castleman-killed-after-taking-out-terrorists-was-executed/ Cops killed the "good guy with a gun" in the Arvada, CO mass shooting: https://www.cpr.org/2022/06/22/olde-town-arvada-shooting-johnny-hurley/ |
We as a nation should be very concerned about this development. |
