Classic MCPS. They took away 20% of my middle schoolers study periods during the week to focus on social-emotional learning and then took away the most popular social outlet they had. They can't even follow their own initiatives and drag everyone down to the lowest level of being treated like criminals who can't be trusted instead of herding the problem students out to their own school, like they did when we were growing up. It's a lose-lose. |
+1 The reaction by MCPS was to place blame on spectators instead of looking to the core problem of violence in their athletics program. The fighting started on the field. Coaches were involved and under investigation. There is no rationale that barring students from outside schools will make athletic events safer. One school in particular - Northwest - has a two year history of fights at football games. Perhaps start with the behavior of those students instead punishing the rest of the Montgomery county community. |
Yep. Here’s another one with video: https://www.fox5dc.com/news/principals-investigate-basketball-game-brawl-at-churchill-high-school.amp |
I’m not understanding how unsupervised middle school students were the problem. Ridiculous reaction by MCPS. |
Oh, this was maddening! The MS students (and teachers) HATE the SEL nonsense. I’d rather they did something like trash pick-up around the school for SSL hours or something. The SEL in MS is a joke. Everyone knows it. In MS,, my kid’s Science teacher was responsible for doing book discussions on the book Stamped, by Kendi and had lessons on the guiding principles of BLM. That was part of their SEL. It was a joke and an enormous waste of time. |
I mean northwest had a student murdered in cold blood. Maybe the problem isn't my son watching his buddy play ball. |
I have no problem with my child learning about these things. I do have a problem with them working on wellness and then taking their social outlets away. |
Northwest also had fights after a football game last year. I think the opposing team was QO. Led to separate gates and time changes for games last year. Perhaps the problem are the Northwest football program and students. The whole county shouldn’t be penalized for the conduct of a school with a long history of violence. MCPS has totally sucked the community atmosphere out of Friday Night Lights. |
Name an example of how unsupervised middle school students were a problem at a football game because the Northwest and Gaithersburg game wasn’t it. MCPS athletics should start by addressing the conduct of athletes and coaches. |
Parents are screaming mental health - MCPS responded. The issue is two groups of kids at a HS game got into a fight. Maybe we should start looking at the parents and require them to attend and supervise their kids. |

Typical over reaction by MCPS.
Do the goons at central office who come up with these policies have any understanding of middle and high school age kids? |
MCPS athletics is all about slogans and videos while hiring the cheapest warm bodies to coach. Very little effort is made to hire coaches who are good examples of character as well as developing programs that support good behavior and strong academic endeavors of athletes. The new “safety” procedures are a joke. They don’t address the fundamental problems within the MCPS athletic programs starting with the behavior of the adults and players on their teams. |
