MIL is driving me insane

Just the latest example of how she makes everything about her: we are looking to adopt a puppy. We found out we can move to the next step in the adoption process and are excited. It would be a lab puppy. Her response? “Oh you know I don’t like those big dogs. (BIL) has those two goldens and I hate it. Well, if I don’t like your dog, I just won’t visit.”

I wanted to just say, “great, then don’t visit!”

Maybe I should have said that.

You have a very low threshold for 'driving someone insane' She is just making conversation. You are making a mountain out of a molehill

I could go ahead and list easily two dozen more examples. She has an incredible ability to make everything into a pity party about her.

oh yes the terrible MIL. That is so new! Trust me, you will drive your kids' spouse crazy too!

Sounds like a Debbie Downer. “Hopefully somewhere in there you’re also happy for us.”

This is excellent.

Well, one thing I won’t do is complain to my son about his unavoidable travel during my visit, saying “I forget you even live in this house. I can’t depend on you for anything.”

This is what success looks like, OP. You've solved your annoyance with her visits by getting a big dog. Problem solved! Celebrate your victory!

I will definitely look at it like that!

Make sure once the dog is home that you send photos of the dog frequently, and sign all cards:

Love Bill, Jessica, Teddy, Claire…and Fido, too!

Well done, OP. 😉

Count your blessings, OP. I would have had to get a pet snake to have the same response. Enjoy your puppy!

She is the reason your son is as awesome as he is. Some of you DILs really kill me with your whining and intolerance. Show some respect.

I'm not defending MIL behavior, that's an individual and personal thing, but it is really ridiculous on here how DILs can't seem to stop.

Lol she sounds terrible. Don’t listen to the trolls defending her. Post more that she says

My theory on MILs is that they may be just lovely people...until they get around their DIL and then the worst comes out.

I think your grammar is atrocious.

Yeah, he is the way he is largely because he has made conscious efforts to not be like her.
