Why don't Tesla's have front license plates? Isn't it required in VA?

During last week's traffic enforcement in Fairfax, a bunch of Teslas without license plate were pulled over. Not sure if it's enough for them to put a front plate on.

I've seen plenty of Teslas in D.C. without front license plates. There's one down the block from us that used to not have one, and one day last spring, I saw they had a ticket. By that afternoon, the owner was out installing the license plate.

I had the same question after a trip to California recently, though -- saw so many Teslas without front plates there that I googled whether they were permitted without them. No, turns out just a lot of Tesla drivers have decided the car looks better without a plate there and they're happy to pay the fines. Seems dumb to me! But I guess I'm just a sucker with a less expensive electric car and (gross) a license plate on the front.

It's not self-absorbed to not have a front plate. The states that only have one plate are not less safe than the other states. Look it up.

It's silly to require two plates and the cops get it.

It doesn't affect public safety.

In April 2019, the Ohio General Assembly amended state law to require the display of only a rear license plate starting in July 2020, marking the first time since World War II that Ohio has not had front plates.[46][47]

In 2022, the Alaska State Legislature passed a law stating only one license plate would be issued per vehicle. [48]

The front frame was in the trunk when I bought mine. It was up to me to stick it on. Many people don’t want to and risk a ticket.

Above the law. Ok…

I haven’t seen any in our Tesla-filled neighborhood.

Blame the cops for not enforcing it. If it made them (and the public) less safe they would.

Logic tells you it's a silly law.

So now it’s ok that cops don’t enforce some laws. Interesting.

Please back up the notion that cars with only rear plates are a threat to public safety.

Thanks.

I own a MB worth about 150k, it has MD front plates, dealer installed (though I did spring for the AMG license plate holders because why not?)

They don’t have to be a threat to public safety, what’s obnoxious about it is deciding that for aesthetic reasons, the law doesn’t apply to you. You don’t like the license plate law, organize to get it changed.

They’d pay the fine, I imagine.

Not their fault they’ve never been ticketed.

Under Virginia law courts have the discretion to dismiss the ticket upon submission of evidence that you have affixed a plate. Some folks go to the trouble of using a tow hook license plate mount when parking.

So you all get a pass during the safety inspection without a front plate? Our failed and we had to go back to get re-inspected after velcroing a front plate.
