Duke

Northwestern
Syracuse
University of Dayton
University of Delaware
University of Pittsburgh
Vanderbilt (10 hours)
Wake Forest

Again, Dayton is Catholic so no to that one.

There are two categories if Division 1 football now--FBS and FCS.
There are other Catholic colleges in FCS.

Duh. But nobody cares about that level of football.

Dayton, Akron, Miami, Holy Cross, Georgetown, Fordham, etc., etc.

Other than that, I think it meets all of OP's other requirements really well!

So is Syracuse.

Akron is a public univerrsity.

Miami does not have a religious affiliation.

No, Syracuse is not Catholic. It has roots in the Methodist Episcopal church, but has been non sectarian for over 100 years.

The responses here are crazy. OP clearly stated she was not looking for a church affiliated school, and everyone keeps mentioning Dayton!

As I said, they’re not top level football. Nobody goes to any of those schools to root for the football team. Also, neither Akron nor Miami are Catholic, and they both ARE in the top football division.

You are clueless.

No, that is NOT what you said. You specifically said "Division 1." FCS *IS* Division 1.

This is a great list given the criteria. Thoughts on these OP?

Yea this is a really good example of how useless DCUM threads are when it comes to colleges. No only is OP’s specific requests being ignored, poster after poster has no idea what she’s talking about. If you think Syracuse is Catholic you don’t even know the basics.

If you find one like that, please let me know. It may not exist. My kid likes mid-sized schools, but the ones we've considered are under 10,000 undergrads (W&M has around 6,500, I believe, and yes I know it supposedly lacks school spirit).

W&M is regularly voted as having the happiest students, the highest alumni giving rate, and students just really love the school. But though they have football and basketball and plenty of people go to games, no one would mistake them for a school that orients itself towards sports if that's what OP means by "strong spirit." I think mid-size schools with not that common. Honestly, UVA would be a better bet--it's only 17k and has a lot of spirit around games. Or JMU--yes it's nearly double at around 19k. But these are smaller schools than VT or GMU or UMd and they do feel 'mid-sized' to me.

I was using shorthand. Obviously I know there are two divisions. Nobody says “I want to go to a football school” and goes to an FCS school.

U of Miami has some of those -school spirit, 12K student body. Too expensive but they give merit aid and it's far but a direct flight.

U of Vermont similar size and distance with less spirit.
