Looking for a school with about 10 k student body; football and basketball teams; strong spirit; no more than 60k tuition; non-church affiliated; preferably within 8 hours of DMV. We are stuck. Thanks.
If you find one like that, please let me know. It may not exist. My kid likes mid-sized schools, but the ones we've considered are under 10,000 undergrads (W&M has around 6,500, I believe, and yes I know it supposedly lacks school spirit).
W&M is regularly voted as having the happiest students, the highest alumni giving rate, and students just really love the school. But though they have football and basketball and plenty of people go to games, no one would mistake them for a school that orients itself towards sports if that's what OP means by "strong spirit." I think mid-size schools with not that common. Honestly, UVA would be a better bet--it's only 17k and has a lot of spirit around games. Or JMU--yes it's nearly double at around 19k. But these are smaller schools than VT or GMU or UMd and they do feel 'mid-sized' to me.
