I grew up near UD. Many high school friends went there. They pushed the honors program like crazy at my HS. I was one of the only people in my class who refused to use it as my safety.
That said, the town and university are very cute. I spent lots of time with friends when I was home on breaks from my school. My friends always said I was an honorary Blue Hen (a$$ kickin chicken, as they like to say there) I was friends with many in a particular fraternity house and lots of people in the marching band. I think it is pricey for OOS, but if you get merit, it is definitely a decent place to go to school for 4 years. I didn’t want to be that close to home, but I definitely saw why people chose it. Aside - one random memory I have is going with several of my HS friends that were UD students to go to a free ballroom dance session on campus. Big enough for fun stuff like that regularly |

I liked it on my tour. Campus was pretty and fairly compact. Only 2 hours away and there's an Amtrak station there. The dorms seemed a little older, I don't think they were ac'd.
DD could not have gotten in to UMCP. We also looked at JMU/CNU/VCU, Miami Ohio, UMBC, Towson, Elon, Temple, Pitt. |
| It’s a school for more average kids (not straight A’s, 1100-1400 SATs, etc) |
oh, my word - kids like that exist? How dare they /s |
They have a whole extension and hands on research in Lewes. Pretty good for a relatively local school! |
| I wonder how many get turned off by the Blue Hen mascot? |
Is it really any worse than a turtle? |
Like mine! It's a very nice school. I felt like it had a little bit of everything and many different kinds of kids would be very happy there.

My son was admitted to UDel. My DH and I very much liked the campus, his college (Engineering), the size (not too large, not too small), and the distance from home (Mont. Co.). I thought the Engineering faculty and dean were amazing during the 2 visits we had.
My son also liked the campus, Engineering tour/faculty, the size of the campus & student body, and the fact that it wasn't 25 miles away with tons of kids from his HS (aka College Park). He was offered significant merit aid and honors program. But my son decided Delaware wasn't "his place" and ended up at a school in the south. Delaware's student population was just too much NJ, NY, Philly, and DMV kids. My son was really looking for something "different" than DMV. I was a bit sad about his decision, but I understood why. |
Have you seen Franklin & Marshall's mascots? Connecticut College's? That would be an incredibly stupid way to choose your undergraduate school. |
I mean...Stanford! |
Do you always stereotype whole groups of people? Every school has VERY smart students, who sometimes choose lower ranked schools because that is what they can afford. Do better. |
Newsflash: not all kids choose the "best" (which to you is synonymous with most highly ranked I guess) school they get into. They take a more holistic approach, and opt for best fit. Then you have the sheep, who allow USNWR to choose their college . Lot of them in evidence here. |
17 year olds make these decisions. They have a right to a voice in it. They are often less mature than 40 year olds. I treat my child with respect, not disdain. |
This. They may get into higher ranked schools but UDel is more affordable. They are pretty good with merit. It was a strong 2nd place to VT for my DS. |
