I don’t even think they have to be parish kids. We’ve had a few kids counseled out of our private (not catholic) end up there |
|
. . . And enter the Catholic school haters. Stop it. Not everyone gets in. I know of in-parish kids who were actually baptized at Saint Mary’s who couldn’t get in. It’s a great school, that has educated impressive alumni that they don’t even brag about (unlike other schools in this area).
I’m personally excited for the new Principal; he seems incredibly qualified and is obviously a veteran Catholic educator. How many emails do you expect from this guy during summer break? |
Any concrete examples? Or is it their mere existence (invasion) in your precious little, grossly overrated Old Town that troubles you? |
Well said. Hilarious to read all the “Big 3” snobs pretend like their little snowflakes will get into too colleges, when 95 pct of them will end up at GMU, JMU, UMaryland — despite their pissing away $35k a year, when they could have achieved the same result for free (or for substantially less). What a waste. |
I’m sorry you have experienced this as a neighbor. I will point out pick up is at Jones Point park, how do you see this behavior? If they are driving irresponsibly please tell the school or the police officer on duty. Or are you referring to the parents in front of the school, whose children are walkers and therefore your SE Old Town neighbors. Yes, it is summer, and I agree parents should not be receiving a lot of emails from the school, but I would have expected a “hey, I’m your new principal, it’s great to be here! Enjoy the rest of your summer!” email by now. . |
Please give examples. The cars have to line up to get into the blacktop. Not all cars can pick up in the first round and they have to line up. This is the procedure that was set up in collaboration with the city /police. This is also a problem with every urban school and the school was there well before any current homeowner bought their home. This past year cars lined up at Jones Point, so even that was not an issue. The only other aspect would be those who have a bike or walker pass. They stand at one of the corners and wait for kids to be dismissed. What would be your suggestions? There are other states that provide buses to private schools. Unfortunately not in Virginia. |
Actually I grew up going to st Mary’s so would like to give the school the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately the cars consistently block intersections, block drive ways, etc. That would be manageable if it were just right near the school, but a large number of families claim their children are “walkers” so they can pick them up from a few blocks away without having to wait in line. These are the parents that have fairly poor behavior. Thanks for your generalization of old town, you seem incredibly mature and neighborly. |
The Jones point pick up doesn’t bother me at all, and I assume the residents who live right near the school knew what they were getting in to as the school has been there longer than them. It’s the families who claim to be walkers and park their giant suburbans and block us in (blocks away), yet have waynewood, belle haven, etc stickers on their cars and no old town parking permits so clearly should not be classified as walkers. I actually missed pickup at my child’s preschool bc it’s not walking distance and a “walker” family had parked their car across my driveway and left. Turns out they were sitting in another moms car chatting, oblivious. I hate to complain bc I know space is at a premium, but the school needs to make families do the organized carpool line if they don’t actually live or work in old town. |
Please let the school know what you observe, especially if you are seeing obnoxious behavior or think people are abusing a walker privilege. We are all part of the community and should treat one another with respect. |
|
The whole concept of “walkers” is total BS. The school shouldn’t restrict or micromanage HOW the kid gets to school. None of their damn business. My kid should be able to parachute in as far as they’re concerned. I hate that stupid walker rule, so I ignore it and am proud of doing so.
Old Town is a PUBLIC area. If you don’t like the cars, MOVE. |
If all of the kids were just turned out of school into the neighborhood for cars to park and pick up, it would be unpleasant for everyone. It's not a neighborhood school where most of the kids are able to walk. Morning carpool parents routinely blow stop signs, block intersections/driveways, and speed. Afternoon carpool is not as much of an issue. |
In case anyone wasn't sure of the general attitude of St Mary's parents, this is a good snapshot. |
I wonder if any PUBLIC schools in the area restrict or mandate HOW students get to school, such as saying you can’t walk if you live more than x miles from the school. (Hint - they don’t and never would.). But the woke atheist heathens in charge of the city impose different rules on St Marys. |
I was thinking the same thing. I am Catholic and am embarrassed by that response. Too many Trumpers at the school. |
Oh my. This poster does NOT represent the general attitude of St Marys families. Most of us care about our community and aren’t as self centered as the “I don’t follow the rules, my kid can be a walker if I say so” poster. As parents, we should demonstrate courtesy, adherence to the rules, and be a good steward of the community. PP, your sinful behavior (ex. envy, greed, wrath!) is not Catholic. Go to confession. Back to the new principal, I hope he is a success. |
