DC got in. We have to accept by this Friday and DC is in a residential camp with very limited internet/phone connectivity this week!
Desperately looking for suggestions from anyone regarding course selections which are also due this Friday. Please help! |
Call the camp and explain that it is a school related decision and you have to speak to your child. |
We did and DC would be able to complete the form but does not have ability to understand/research what the course selections entail. In the link they provided us, it has this info listed below and we are not sure why a 10th grader needs to again take English 9, Biology and PE 9 which DC completed in his base school. Or are we misunderstanding something?
Choosing Your 10th Grade Courses Through this course selection form, the Department of Student Services will gather your initial course requests and alternates for registration. The following courses are already pre-loaded onto your schedule: - Monday Advisory Period (Required for all FCPS students) - English 9 (Integrated Biology, English, and Technology - IBET) - Biology (IBET) - Design & Technology (IBET) - Health & PE 9 (unless completed during the summer of 2022) - TJ Research and Statistics 1 (Fall semester math course required for all freshmen) With the above courses preloaded, you will have the opportunity to select two electives, and we will load these requests for you. Additionally, we will place you in a spring semester math course based on the highest level of math you've completed. |
I would call TJ. The research stats and tech class is a thing……but your kid has 9English credit. Something is strange. |
It floors me every year that TJ continues to opportunity hoard during 10th and 11th grade admissions. There are tons of open seats and they never fully fill the class.
They also do a terrible job spreading the word about admissions. No marketing whatsoever. |
i wonder why people are "confused" when they requested three teacher recommendation, spent time on filling up the forms, taking PSAT/SAT. There is no wait-list either so the seats from the "confused" people are lost too. |
We hear this every year from aggrieved parents whose kids didn't make the cut for 9th grade. Give it up already. |
for FCPS are the froshmores from the feeder schools McLean and Langley? What about high schools fed from other feeder middle schools Rachel Carson and Rocky Run?
Is it harder to get in the sophmore year? |
No. |
It could be "harder" this year if many interested kids who were denied admission under the new process applied and the number of seats were kept relatively low. Also it seems it requires "three" teacher recommendations. There is no reservations based on school or other categories. Also, the final decision is made by actual TJ teachers and not the "admission office". Anyone have the stats for the new sophomore class (class of 2025)? |
From my experience, it's actually considered to be harder than the freshman round due to the lower amount of spaces and extra requirements. Acceptance rates aren't released, but I assume a pool of denied freshmen wanting a second chance will be large enough that the 10-15 students they usually admit would make the acceptance rate lower than the freshman round. Extra requirements include teacher recs and an optional PSAT score. |
The high-achieving students all got in as freshmen. The 3rd rate preppers who were able to slip in with the old system were denied. |
3rd rate students got in as freshmen after the admission system changed and many got kicked out for failure to maintain min 3.0 ugpas. |
Yes, under the old system some students who had early access to the test were able to slide in under the radar but had a tough time while at TJ, but with the new system only the very top students seem to get in. |
Many more students are failing out or transferring back in the past couple of years. |
