No. The new regulations have to include money to invest in buying back the illegal weapons. There are places where this has been done successfully.

Use some of the massive budgets made for policing and law enforcement. That would be a good use of some of that budget.

Honestly, you worry about that another day. First step is just restricting the sale of new assault rifles. That has to be the initial focus- just get back to where we were pre-2004 with sales/manufacturing. This singular focus- one that doesn’t actually take anyone’s current property away- is easier to rally behind and may be more widely accepted.

Agree.
A government funded buyback for full price paid (inflation adjusted to 2022 but not beyond), insurance requirement for current owners, and serious requirements for resale and transfers (including inheritance) would also help bend the curve. Don't need total solution but we need something.

Right. I’d take that- just moving forward, even. Moving toward any reasonable measure that might keep an automatic assault out of the hands of a crazy person. Something. Anything.

We’re never going to get a perfect solution. But we can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. I’m not after the odd hand gun or hunting rifle right now. I want these automatic assault rifles, that are meant to kill massive amounts of people, out of the hands of any asshole that walks in off the street and wants one. That is not too much to ask. It HAS to be done.

Where do I fit in? I don’t believe in banning guns. I believe in background checks, licensing, waiting periods and training. Probably more! I don’t want another school shooting.

You fit in. Those things would be so a lot, wouldn’t they? It’s not too much to ask.

Would help a lot, I mean.

I don’t think it’s a lot to ask. But the march is for a 100% ban on guns, unless I am misunderstanding this aspect of the group/march.

We need to repeal the second amendment. Replace it with a blanket ban on firearm possession and sales, with few exceptions for hunting and similar sports.

The burden of proof has to be on the individual: license (like driving: theory and practicum, final exam), psychiatrist assessment and full background check.

No fully automated or assault type weapons, no handguns, no accessories allowing modifications to that end, and criminalization of modifications of weapons. A variety of semi-automated hunting rifles allowed only.

Note: handguns are the most lethal firearms - they are responsible for over half of gun deaths in the USA, through accidental discharge, suicide and homicide. They need to be completely banned.

We had an assault weapons and high capacity magazines ban in place for a decade. You can March to bring that back. Does not have to include every single gun but these extremely dangerous weapons of war need to go.

That is the ban that needs to come back. It was not overturned or voted on - Bush just let it expire - and that is a big reason why we are in this mess.

And it will be impossible to bring it back with gun rights electeds more staunch than ever in their positions and desperate need to retain in power.

I wouldn't be too sure. Millions of single-issue voters just got created watching the myth of the "good guy with a gun" get destroyed and replaced by the absolute horror of 4th graders murdered by someone who should have never been able to get his hands on an AR-15, while parents screamed helplessly outside as they were held back and prevented from saving them. Every parents worst nightmare, an unimaginable evil - and no reasonable justification for the conditions that allowed this to happen remain. I've gone 50 years with zero interest or engagement in politics - but I'm putting my money where my mouth is with this issue, and am not afraid to speak out. Enough.

Yes. I’m with you. I’m absolutely disgusted, and I won’t stop.

So how much to buy back a weapon? If someone is already in possession of "an illegal weapon" it's going to take a lot of money to get them to turn it over. What do you think that price will be?

Keep in mind that many of these people see these weapons as the means to defend their family. You're essentially asking them to put a price on their child's safety and possibly even their life.

How much money would it take for YOU to sacrifice your child's life?
