yes, busses- there are too many elementary schools to have them all at one start time. |
Oh wow. My daughter’s school will start at 7:50 next year. For kindergarten. I was planning on her being a bus rider but if it comes super early that might not work. |
Why would anyone want a 7:50 start time? It sucks. |
Ugh. My condolences. DD could have handled that just fine but DS sleeps so late, 7:50 would be so hard. |
No they decided in favor of the parents not the teachers and they extended the day which is really crappy for the peons like me that now have to drive home to Fairfax (we can’t afford Arlington) and have to wait until well after 4 to get on 395 and can’t take the 4:00 bus anymore. I’m angry about it because it felt like a bait and switch- Duran just changed it all on his whim, after claiming to listen to us. Adding time to the school day at the end of the day is awful for people like me who have elementary kids of our own who need to get to sports/after school practices and have to commute the slog. Flame away, but one reason I chose teaching as a career was so I could be on a similar schedule to my kids. Adding 9 minutes isn’t just 9 minutes when you factor in the lack of regular metro buses (they only run every half hour) and the fact that getting on 395 10-15 minutes later adds 20 minutes to the commute because of worsening traffic. I’m really angry about it. |
In this case it was to support the teacher's wishes. ATS staff signed a letter that they wanted the earlier start time and the PTA decided to support that position despite the fact that parents only voted a very slim majority for a 7:50 start time. FWIW Contract time will not change so if you were at a 3:41 school you will still be leaving at the same time. |
7:50 is hard? Wait till your kids are in middle school. Good grief! |
How cute you think parents pick up their kids on time ![]() |
DP. Gosh you’re bitter. Sounds like you should speak to your employer, not just say snarky things to someone trying to clarify the ATS post. |
No need to roll your eyes at me. I’m also an APS teacher, I understand how it works. |
Yup bitter. And I know the system and know that posting on this forum has the same effect on the situation as speaking to my employer does. None. Just like the survey (parents and teachers) was pretend to make us feel like we have say, we don’t. So i vent on the internet. It is why the internet was created. |
7:50 is absurdly early for a 5 year old to be at school! |
Eh they’ll adjust. Pre-Covid we all left our house by 7:15. Obviously our schedule has shifted without commuting, so now we generally don’t get up until then. Our school will start at 7:50 next year. It will be an adjustment; but we will adjust. And I know I’ll prefer having the extra work time in the morning, and the chance to let my kids have down time before sports or other activities at 5pm. There’s good and bad with all schedules. But 5 year olds will be able to get up just fine. They’ll just need to be in bed on time in the evening! |
A lot of 5 year olds wake up quite early! Not mine of course, when we were at a 7:55 school it was tough for us. |
Not really. A number of schools already had an 8 am start time, so ten minutes earlier won’t be such a change. What the year should’ve done was move the MS start times later. There is absolutely no world in which 12 and 13 year olds should be going to school that early. It’s developmentally inappropriate. Younger kids are not harmed by early starts. |
