I think everyone is right.
For apple shapes, if this is happening, well, it might just be happening, regardless of size. A drawstring or grippy fabric could help. Something that keeps the waist firmly in place. Or alternatively, something that has some allowance for waist, but very firm grip on much slimmer thighs/hips-- I assume some designer out there designs for apple shapes or otherwise narrow hips. For pear or hourglass shapes, it probably means your leggings are too small, and like a PP noted, the snugness on the butt/thighs pulls the whole thing down, since it's basically just unstructured spandex tubing. I have this shape, and if my leggings are slipping, it's usually that they're too small. For any shape, this can also happen when the leggings are just ridiculously too big or stretched out all around-- that will happen to anyone of any shape, of course-- that's just sagging pants. But if this were the case you'd probably (?) know it. I guess the only thing would be-- and this would be more likely with an apple shape-- you LOATHE even a hint of muffin top or anything cutting into your waist, so you really do buy leggings too big to serve their purpose, really. |

I have the same problem and got some great suggestions here: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1040357.page#22099843

Leggings should only stretch to fit around the body, not vertically, even though most activewear fabrics have stretch in both directions. If the leggings have to stretch to reach the waist (over any part of the body: leg, hip, butt, tummy), then there is active tension pulling on the waistband at all times and with activity they may work down. But there’s no issue with compression in girth. If they’re too tight (or too loose) around the body they probably won’t slip as long as the waist fits.
Eg I’m short but I know the shape of my legs and hips eats fabric, so I buy a medium even though every package that has a height & weight chart would put me in the center of the small range. Brands often cut leggings too short to save fabric, they know they cover well enough in the fitting room. |
I’m a “pear” and after having 10 lbs although my leggings technically still fit I’ve had to go up a size because the butt/thigh pull things downward. The waist isn’t tight - fits like always, but I gain in my butt & thighs… |

Are they inexpensive? The ones I have purchased from Costco, target, or Marshall’s, etc. all do that after a few washes. I finally realized. If you want to running tights that hold up you need to buy quality.
Just my opinion/ experience and others may feel differently! |

I think it's all of the above. You need to find leggings with a higher rise where the waistband grips your body better. And wear underwear underneath that will provide grip instead of slip. And experiment with sizing up or down.
I have multiple pairs of Lululemon leggings that will slip down when I run. But their Align leggings stay in place. I also buy inexpensive leggings, and have found that Colorful Koala leggings roll down during yoga but stay up during runs, whereas CRZ Yoga leggings stay put for yoga but slip a little (not a lot) during runs. And among my CRZ Yoga leggings, the "naked feel" leggings are more likely to slip because they are slick, whereas the winter-weight micro fleece ones I have stay in place better (but cannot be worn in warm weather because they really are warm). As a rule I buy the tightest leggings that don't cut off circulation, both because I like some compression during exercise for circulation and because it helps them stay in place. If a pair of leggings isn't working for whatever you are doing, try something else! And don't be afraid to try joggers instead. I buy classic high waist sweatpants as well as more modern joggers from Outdoor Voices and they are fantastic for strength training. They would also stay in place on a run but I prefer leggings because I like a sleeker feel and also I sweat a lot on runs and I think even very lightweight joggers are just too much fabric. |

Hey Debbie downer, what do you suggest we exercise in? |
I never wear any underwear under leggings. |
Okay, thanks for sharing with the class. Just saying it helps keep them up for those that have a problem with that. |
Lululemon align are the best! They never slip down on me either. I buy my exact size - don’t size up. The wunder under leggings fall down on me - I don’t think they are high rise enough. All Nike leggings fall down too - they aren’t even that cheap but the quality seems poor. |
My DH strongly disagrees with you. |
| I've experienced with both too small and too big leggings - apple shape as well. I like the Old Navy ones but it's hard to find the ones I like, especially since they seem to have no consistent naming convention. I also like the under wonders from Lululemon but I find them too pricy. |
