I read My Friend Anna and I was happy to see that the writers/producers viewed Rachel Williams the way I did when I read her tell-all about being defrauded by Anna. Rachel basically hung out with Anna for months and was happy for Anna to pay for beauty treatments, expensive meals, and travel, and then Rachel was stupid enough not to understand that volunteering her card (her corporate card!) to the hotel in Morocco was going to end with charges to the card. While Anna was a scammer, Rachel was a shallow opportunist. The part I didn’t understand about this in the movie was why they got a 40-something actress with wrinkles, a saggy double chin, and rubbery lip fillers to play 20-something Rachel. It was very distracting to see the Rachel-actress’s mannerisms (confused, innocent eye widening and furrowed brows, over and over, in every scene, and her girlish voice and outbursts) when I know the real Rachel had been mid-twenties. Even though they dressed up the Rachel-actress in girlish dresses and long hair, it looked so off having her pretend to be the same age as Anna. If they were set on using the 40-something actress, why not change the character’s age to reflect this? I’m waiting to see the real Rachel’s response to seeing herself portrayed so badly in the series.
