Why? At 45k it is cheaper than any of t20-t30 private school

For oos it's closer to 80k. Impacted majors and big classes.

45 k is oos tuition at UCs, 10 to 15k less than private schools.

I made this decision. Cal all the way. Brand recognition anywhere in the country is much better.

Better “brand recognition” than UCLA? No. They’re both equal in that department. UCLA is probably more recognizable.

Anonymous wrote:Expensive for OOS, just like Michigan. I don’t know if it’s worth paying all that over in-state UVA or UMD, but I can definitely see the allure for students if cost isn’t an issue.

Nice try. UMD isn't in the same league as UVA or Michigan -- or UCLA or Berkeley.

You can’t just make up numbers like 10%. It’s school-specific and will decrease each year. So which school and which year determines the OOS cap. Critical reasoning skills are important.

See this thread for reports from parents if current/recent students: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1030067.page

Nice try. UVA isn’t in the same league at Berkeley either. Actually Cal is in a league of their own here , followed by Michigan and UCLA, then maybe UVA or UNC.

At UCLA look up whether your anticipated major is impacted. Many, many kids can't get into the classes they need to graduate in 4 years. In many majors kids are taking 5-6 years to get a bachelor's degree.

I would never send my kid to UCLA. It's highly racially and economically segregated and, while sports are well funded, academics are terribly underfunded.

Possibly in terms of sports or a very “90210” way. But academically? No.

By those in the know, absolutely Berkeley. Worldwide, Cal is recognized as the preeminent public university in this country. Only Harvard and Stanford can match its overall academic excellence.

Nice try. Where did I say UVA was in the same league as Berkeley? All I said was that UMD is in the same league as any of these schools. And it isn't.

For those who want to see for themselves, https://admission.ucla.edu/tuition-aid/tuition-fees

66k is the current estimated total cost of attendance. Tuition is 45k but room and board approach 17k, which is a little more than many other places (probably due to location).

(As an aside, not a critical point, their student insurance at 2.7k is a little on the steep side compared to some others.)
