| Don’t go. It’s not safe. The tickets and hotels are cheap and attract a lot of Americans who turn a blind eye to the crimes, murders, and kidnappings there. |
|
We went there a couple of months ago and had a wonderful time. Spent most time at the resort and did a few guided tours.
Go and visit the cenotes, they're a once in a lifetime experience. |
| No. Ask yourself why rooms in a nice hotel are $300/night, but $1000 a night in safer locales. |
| We were there over Xmas. We didn't feel unsafe at the hotel or the airport. I think I would be more concerned above COVID than crime. Our resort had a LOT of people without masks. The airport is crazy packed. Our hotel also had transportation included. We took it there, but didn't on the way home. You have to wait outside for a long time while they gather everyone onto a van, then they dropped folks off at various resorts along the way. A 15 minute cab ride was like an hour with the hotel transportation (all the while you're crammed in a van with strangers, who are mostly masked). |
| How anxious were you? We traveled over Christmas and I found myself super anxious and obsessing over testing positive for the return and getting sick and bringing omicron to the grandparents. It was our first time flying in the pandemic and the trip was only worth it to me because we saw family. That was right when omicron was surging though so maybe you would handle it better. I wouldn’t worry about safety - something could happen like happened in that resort a few months back, but something could happen here in DC as well. |
What a ridiculous fear-mongerer you are. OP, it will be fine. Just don’t buy drugs. |

I was there over Christmas. When you exit the actual airport building, there is a crush of humanity, all trying to sell you trinkets or excursions or taxis or whatever. I didn’t feel unsafe ay all, just annoyed. I arranged for a private transfer to our hotel in the Cancun hotel zone, and I think it was $40 for all of us. We had to walk about 50 yards out of the front doors to find the guy holding a sign. That was definitely worth it compared to waiting for the resort to gather everybody who landed within a half hour range and get on a bus. I used Kalido - they were excellent (see trip advisor). We stayed at our resort and I never once thought about safety other than from Covid, which is a separate issue. But I would not have gone to any of the tourist bars or night clubs, nor would we have let the young adults with us. My nephew walked down the beach a ways, and there were armed guards at the entrance of each resort resort, although we didn’t see them where we were. So the only way for there to be drug gang trouble at a resort would be the JetSki trick again, which feels low risk.
As far as Covid, our resort did what it could, but the main restaurant was inside so there was definitely some exposure risk. |
+1 read below article to go with eyes wide open. Even hotels aren’t safe Tourist drug demand is bringing cartel violence to Mexico’s most popular resorts https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/12/24/mexico-cancun-tourism-cartel-violence |
Omg this is by far the most inflammatory post I’ve ever read on DCUM. The cancun airport is not that dangerous. At all. I’ve been going there for 30 years and never ever saw one sketchy thing there. |
|
We are trying to make the same decision OP. Not too worried about the violence as we are staying in a remote resort we've stayed in before. But I am worried about Covid and that I will be so stressed about the testing to come home that I won't enjoy the trip. Our kids sound similar age to yours.
I reallllly need a vacation and I know they kids would love it, but I just can't decide... |
| I just got back. Amazing trip! The newest incident the media blew up regarding a shooting was actually a guest from Canada that shot two people. Go and have fun! |
It was a guest that did the shooting. A Canadian so pretty sure he wasn’t in the Mexican drug cartel. |
| Cool. As long as the gun fights in my hotel don't involve Mexicans, I'll have a great time! |
