S/O Can we talk about how bad Lin-Manuel Miranda's music is?

We didn't like Encanto at first, but wow 2nd watching and the songs are adored and ear wormed.

Oh god it’s so irritating. Very glad when my kids got over Hamilton. Just grating on the ears.

Mind you, I hate all musicals. Going to see Rent was one of the lowlights of my life.

No rhythm? How do you define rhythm?

But I really dislike the songs he writes - there is no real melody, or rhythm - it's just the same free-flowing sing/speaking with his rapping thrown in. They are all the same! The movie about the singing kickachoo monkey thing, Encanto (which my kids have on repeat on Spotify). Even Moana only had one or two good songs - the rest were...the same types of songs that I can't get into. Is this only me?

Nope you are the odd one, op. We all LOVE LMM. How dare you!!!

Ok your opinion does not count then since we are talking about musicals.

Someone posted in an old Hamilton thread that his bars and cadence sound like 2 Skinnee J’s (for you East Coasters of a certain age) and I totally agree.

I think Hamilton is brilliant but I too have been underwhelmed by any of his more recent stuff. I wonder if Hamilton’s brilliance is due to Alex Lacamoire’s orchestrations as much as LMM.

The music in Encanto isn’t my favorite, but Moana, and hello? HAMILTON, are amazing.

Agree with you both. It’s not terrible music, but it’s gimmicky and corny. His nasally voice is the biggest turn off, though.

This is why I think OP is narcissistic, its like objectively silly to say he has no rhythms or melodies. We Don't Talk About Bruno, love it or hate it, is an INCREDIBLY complex song rhymically and melodically, from a technical musical standpoint. Like it, don't like it, whatever, that's personal. But that song takes like 5 distinct narrative verses and then layers them for a united harmonious crescendo (and that is like, not a metaphorical crescendo to be dramatic but what crescendo actually means when you are composing a song).

Anonymous wrote:OP here. I knew this might be a divisive post. I really want to like his stuff. I do. I LOVED (and still love) the Disney music of my childhood - the Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, era. I love Frozen (it's the same ilk as the older ones). I even like some of the Moana stuff (including You're Welcome - that song is AWESOME!). And my kids really like Encanto - as I said, they're listening to the soundtrack constantly. I guess it's just that I cannot get into his style at all (and agree that his voice is just not my cup of tea, which is probably why I really didn't like the kinkachoo movie). Ok - just wanted to check if it was just me (and apparently it is!) That's ok. I'll suffer through the LMM steamroller.

Please don’t suffer through his music if it makes you unhappy just to please some randos on here.

Didn't get in trouble with some gross, me too-esque stuff?

Surprised he is still so widely worshipped.

No me too stuff. In the Heights got criticized for only having light skinned latino actors. He apologized.

I hated Moana and am dreading being forced to watch Encanto!

I don't know who this person is but I do know every single song in Moana because the music is amazing.
