| I totally get the adulation for the guy - he's obviously a brilliant creative mind. But I really dislike the songs he writes - there is no real melody, or rhythm - it's just the same free-flowing sing/speaking with his rapping thrown in. They are all the same! The movie about the singing kickachoo monkey thing, Encanto (which my kids have on repeat on Spotify). Even Moana only had one or two good songs - the rest were...the same types of songs that I can't get into. Is this only me? |
| Yes. Only you. |
|
How DARE YOU diss Moana!!! Every song in that movie is amazing.
I cannot stop singing We dont talk about Bruno, so yes, it's just you. YOU'RE WELCOME |
| No we cannot talk about it. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a national treasure. |
|
Whaaaat? No. Yes he has a recognizable style but it’s still quality music. I don’t like all the songs (especially Dos Oruguitas) but I can still see the talent coming through.
If you want to rag on his voice, you’ll get more people agreeing with you. |

I mean, there is a lot of music I don't like that much. Like it doesn't speak to me and so I just don't listen to much of it. But my response to that feeling has never been to say that that music is inherently bad, that it is not musical or rhythmic etc. I just accept that it isn't my jam. And that its fine!
You are saying that like, one of the most revered and prolific songwriters of the last decade is inherently bad at music. I think that is an INCREDIBLY narcissistic take to be honest. I definitely think he has a stylistic fingerprint that might not be for everyone, but to act like because you personally don't like his music that his music must be objectively BAD is just...very narcissistic. And I am not some LMM devotee or anything. |
I will say, I disagree on Moana. Only "You're Welcome" really does the thing you're talking about, the rest are decently melodic. That said, I really don't like the style you mean, especially the repetitive internal rhyming. It's impressive in a technical way, but I don't enjoy it. He's clearly talented and people love it, but he's not my thing. Really prefer the Disney movies where the Lopezes do the music. |
|
Are you the person arguing with psychotic passion that encanto is a TERRIBLE movie and that it is LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE anyone liked it as much as they are saying?
What's your deal? Did LMM spill his coffee on you in an elevator or something? |
| I agree, OP. Can’t stand it. I also think he’s a terrible actor. |
Given that the OP's post is essentially "this guy's really talented, but I don't really enjoy his stuff" you seem like the one with the personal investment. |
|
I love most of LMM’s work. Including Moana. We listen to his work regularly.
I wasn’t crazy about Encanto though. |
|
The question is: is he musically talented to people who do not like that particular type of music? It's a very good question. I do not like his type of music at all. I do not think he has any particular musical talent relative to the thousands of song-creators out there. However I do see that he has excellent directing and storytelling talent, and he has a charismatic personality, which people flock to. And that's fine. |
| OP here. I knew this might be a divisive post. I really want to like his stuff. I do. I LOVED (and still love) the Disney music of my childhood - the Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, era. I love Frozen (it's the same ilk as the older ones). I even like some of the Moana stuff (including You're Welcome - that song is AWESOME!). And my kids really like Encanto - as I said, they're listening to the soundtrack constantly. I guess it's just that I cannot get into his style at all (and agree that his voice is just not my cup of tea, which is probably why I really didn't like the kinkachoo movie). Ok - just wanted to check if it was just me (and apparently it is!) That's ok. I'll suffer through the LMM steamroller. |
Have you been in the encanto thread? There is one (or maybe more) posters who are like, bizarrely negative about a 90 minute animated children's film. Since I am assuming this thread is spinning off of that thread, I assumed that that impression carryover was acceptably relevant. |
|
Ok, I will admit, I really don’t know his music!!
I did see In The Heights, which I thought was fantastic (story line & music). The music in Encanto was unmemorable. I never saw Hamilton. Moana was years ago & don’t remember the music either. I know he has a big following, but I think there are just as many people (more) who don’t know his work. |
