Northam’s last minute pardon of Joe Morrissey is disgusting

She’s 25–she needs to get a divorce. The pardon might enable her to do so, because if her husband has income he can pay alimony and child support. Guy sounds awful and I don’t wish him well in any way. But, if he’s not going to jail, he might as well have an income so he can support his victim and her kids. Someone should help her get out of that crap situation though. And get her good birth control.

Morrissey has a very specific niche of voters who are just too forgiving and believe in second (third and fourth) chances. He has no clout or respect outside of that group.

I don’t believe they even live together and he isn’t super involved with the kids. She is in a terrible situation where I’m not even sure if she has her high school diploma. What kind of job prospects could she even have? How can she get divorced. I also heard her family pushed for her to marry him and stay together. She’s been abused and used and at the tender age of 25 has 4 young kids, no education. I feel terrible for her.

I was reading his Wikipedia and its hilarious. He won re-election WHILE IN JAIL. But Virginians have the nerve to look down on places like Baltimore?

The only reason they got him out of office is Virginian elected officials in the State Assembly AND the U.S. Congress put a damned target on his back and kept opening BS investigations into everything from his personal finances to him littering outdoors. They wanted him gone.

Look, you can keep posting stats on Virginia Senate District 16 all you want but it shows a complete lack of understanding of who he is and who voted for him. I am not sure why you spend so many posts defending him, but yes, the average Richmonder thinks he’s gross and a joke. Maybe spend some of that fighting energy you have to help victims of sex abuse or charities that help child brides like Too Young to Wed.

PS - There are plenty articles out there on why Morrissey keeps winning his district. He’s very cunning to his target audience, lower to middle class AA. His district is an overwhelming AA majority. He pounds the pavement for their votes the old fashion way (knocks on doors, goes to community events, speaks at churches), is very good at remembering what people told him and will every now and then make a big scene on the Senate floor or in front of a microphone on a topic a constituent told him about. He makes huge promises to his voters, tells them no one else will listen to them like him. He’s their white savior. And now he brings his AA barely out of her teens wife and their 4 biracial kids to seal the deal. He’s got Hopewell and Petersburg in his district. He’s done zero for either.

I liked Northam until this. I live in Richmond and have observed Morrissey in court many times. He was a spoiled rich boy who'd tell anyone who was listening that his father was a brain surgeon and he could do what he wanted. Who can forget the time he beat an African American attorney in the courthouse? Attorney David Baugh is the son of a Tuskegee Airman and I've only ever known him to be honorable. Morrissey lost his law license back then and he moved to Australia to teach for a few years. He somehow got his license back.

The young woman he married was 17 when her father raised concerns. The age of consent in Virginia is 18 if you all need a reminder. It was found Morrissey texted a nude photo of the girl to a friend and said something of the nature, "look what I had last night." He was 56 years old at the time. Barf. He was only convicted of a misdemeanor. Here when an attorney is tried for a crime or a driving offense, the judges schedule it last on the dockett and close the courtroom. Let me find the happy couple's wedding photo that he released to the media. Look at the symbolism, plantation owner towering above his conquest:

I can’t find anything about this - did Morrissey spend all his previous 50 years in office etc unmarried? So his four children with his younger wife are his only ones correct?

He already has an income. He's owned an estate on the James River and his family was wealthy. He could easily pay child support and some of his older children by other women are already over 18 so he won't have those payments. His Wikipedia page recounts him teaching school so maybe he can go do that. His record as an attorney is appalling. I hope she's able to do what she wants.
