Sub protest

And I assume that number is without any kind of benefits. Agree, not enough. No way.

Please don’t forget that they get zero benefits, no sick leave, and no certainty of daily work (not an issue in the pandemic but still an issue in general).

It’s not much more than max weekly unemployment checks. I agree they need to increase pay. Call it hazard pay. We have the money. How much Mo we did we just waste testing all of DCPS for one day of school?

You might want to check your work on that calculation I’m a full time regular DCPS teacher and I don’t make $78,000

Does the district want subs during a viral surge of a pandemic or not? What the hell did they get all that COVID relief money for?

You realize that regular DCPS teachers are hired for a starting salary of around $50k? my kid's geometry teacher made about $55k last year in his/her 5th year of teaching.

It’s retired teachers only, it doesn’t have anything to do with certification. I’m a certified DCPS teacher that substitutes, I have young children that my parents want to watch and like the flexibility to only work on those days. I am not eligible for the increased rate. Also, even if a substitute teacher works every school day there are not benefits available. So unless you get health insurance somewhere else you’re out of luck. There aren’t enough substitutes because no one who doesn’t have money and benefits coming from somewhere else can afford to do it.

They're retired...why would they need benefits? Anyone over 65 qualifies for free healthcare via medicare? They don't need a retirement account because they're already retired. Sick leave...they can just not sign up to sub that day.

I think long term subs should get paid more especially if they are teaching, creating lesson plans, creating homework & tests and grading. You add all that in and $150 a day is below minimum wage.

No substitute teachers get benefits, even those that are not retired. That’s why it’s so hard to get subs, who’s going to be able to work for $120/day with no benefits? That’s one of the reasons non retiree subs are upset.

My kid has had the same sub for 2 months, I had no idea the pay was so lousy. DCPS has to pony up.

I would sub for a day or two at my individual school if they requested it. No problems with that. I don’t think I’d be very good at it, but if they just needed bodies and provided some basic guidance I would do it.

But yeah the sub pay is abysmal and they should get paid more.
