Top notch for engineering too.

I don't get why a kid from another part of the country would go to a big state school somewhere else, unless you have or want to create some tie to that area.

Sometimes, it is nice to get away from where you grew up to get a different perspective on the country or world. That is part of what college is all about. If you grow up in the DC area, going to UMD, Gtown/GW/AU/UVA isn't really getting that fresh perspective as going to New England, the Midwest, the South or West might provide. It isn't about making connections in a different part of the country, though there is nothing wrong with starting a career in Chicago or Minneapolis where a lot of kids from UW and the BigTen end up.

Oh, of course this old DCUM favorite trope has to come up. So predictable. There are people from every state and all over the world at Wisconsin. There are people from every kind of background there is.

But isn’t college the time when people, I don’t know . . . do this?

we can afford it, kid isn't real enthused about our state school options (UMD), she wants the big school experience, and also likes the idea of going to school in a different part of the country- feels that if you're gonna up and move across the country, college is a really good time to do it. Why not?

Just know that the vast majority of her friends will be from Wisconsin. Most of the guys she dates will be from Wisconsin. Most of them will stay on Wisconsin post graduation. To me, that gets pretty one dimensional and I would say that about any state school.

Actually not true. I went there for undergrad and had friends from all over the country and world. And that was 30+ years ago. It is much more cosmopolitan now.

Wisconsin is an excellent school to attend if you are from the East Coast. There is a large population of kids from the DMV, Philly, NY/NJ, and Boston. The academics and social scene are great. The lakes are beautiful. There is a nice range of ethnic restaurants nearby and the best farmers market in the state can be found on the Capitol Square.

I grew up in WI, met my future spouse (originally from the East Coast) in the UW-Madison dorms, and we have lived in MD for more than 20 years. He graduated with a BBA from the business school and is now the CEO of a national healthcare company.

^^ I hope this doesn’t sound mean. If that’s what a kid wants then that is great. I’m just saying that is my hesitation in encouraging my ds to apply

What, that your kid might fall in love with someone from Wisconsin and move to MD and become a CEO of a healthcare company?

Whoever wrote this did NOT attend UW-Madison. There are students from every single state and more than 30 countries. 50% of first year students are out of state. I met and married a guy from Philly and we do not live in Wisconsin. Our college friends live all over the DMV, NY, Boston, Florida, LA, San Fran, Denver, Chicago, Minneapolis, Texas, and Seattle.

Heh, actually it's the opposite and a source of major concern in the state. Brain drain and such. A lot of the best and brightest from WI go to UW-Madison, move out of state for jobs, and never come back. I swear I've met way more Wisconsin alums living in DC (and previously, the tri-state area) than I ever did growing up in Green Bay.

You clearly did not go there and your opinion should be taken accordingly. I did, and you could not be more wrong. OP’s daughter will meet great people from
all over. Don’t listen to ignorant comments from know nothing people who just come on these threads for the purpose of crapping all over everything that isn’t on the coasts.

University of Wisconsin Madison is one of DD’s schools as well. We visited and she loved it.
