Most parents on here seem to be genuinely helpful. Then there are the posters who are just straight up rude. |
Because they can...it's anonymous. No consequences. |
i asked this once on off-topic and i got a LOT of people saying "well, 'm nice all day long at work, school, kid's school, etc and i come on here to unload"
it seemed weird to me: why is it satisfying to put anonymous people down online anonymously? |
Sometimes it's just a visceral reaction to stupidity/ignorance.
Sometimes it's just because I feel bitchy, and like PP said, it's anonymous. I'm always nice in person and it gets tiring. So DCUM is an outlet. I've gotten rude responses to stuff I've posted. Don't let it get to you. Shake it off. It's all fair game. |
Because you can't put people in one's non-digital world down without hurting them and dealing with consequences. And you don't really want to because it's painful. Here you can just let loose with something rude or bitchy... it's perversely satisfying. I'm not saying it's right. |
Is there another DC-based parenting forum that requires people to sign-in and/or is moderated? I assume that would cut down the mean posts. |
Exactly. There's no filter. You get exactly what people are thinking, good or bad. |
It's the Net, duh. |
women |
Not DC based, but babycenter.com is boring, but nice. |
i was just on the nanny thread and I think it's worse today than normal. Thing is, there is lots of great advice out there and for those of us who are not used to hiring nannys, great advice on that very new situation. |
People are rude here because they can be. Even simple innocuous comments get mean reactions sometime. People jump on everything. Example -- someone posted on the private school thread that their kid had a high IQ and then everyone jumped on to say 131 wasn't a high IQ. It was mean and unnecessary. Here the woman probably thought her kid was special and now he's been made out to be "just average" or "ordinary" |
I think most people are helpful, but if you ask a dumb question or sound stupid, you will get called on it. In the "real world" no one would dare say things that are said on this site. I like it. To me, it is refreshingly brutal honesty. You can't get it anywhwere else. |
For sport, I think. |
Some people are strangely annoyed by others' niceness, innocent questions, positive thoughts or humor. |
