Head of School at National Child Research Center (NCRC) - Arrest warrant issued

Common, especially with a change of counsel.

Carroll made $200k and that includes a fairly recent bump up. He does not own a home to borrow against. Defense in federal court is very expensive. The public defender is a good option for him. Almost all of these cases end with a plea anyway. He is not going to be freed any time soon no matter who his counsel is.

He has 2 kids, one in college and I believe, one in HS. They do not have the means to finance an expensive and prolonged defense. Not sure how his wife and kids would feel about bankrupting themselves to tilt at windmills. He will take a plea and be incarcerated for a decade or more, depending on additional charges.

Where do we follow this case? The media doesn’t seem to care to follow up. Where can I read about the outcome of yesterday’s hearing? Thank you.

Yesterday’s hearing was pushed back to Dec. 18. He will remain detained at least until then. In order to gain access to the court records, you need to go on to the court website (United States District Court for the District of Columbia) and set up a PACER account. Alternatively, I assume people will be posting updates here.

he made closer to 280K but still you are correct. even if he made 500K a year, fighting this would only lead to bankruptcy. I have to image whatever money he does have, he'd like for his wife and kids to be able to move on. It would be hard for them to stay in the DC area.

I'm very surprised he didnt own property. he's been here a long time and had good jobs and income. We all cant live in kalorama but plenty of other areas to have purchased

Not everyone wants to be a homeowner; some people prefer to rent. Can we stop speculating about his family's personal finances and stick to Carroll's crimes?

But aren't criminal defendants only entitled to a public defender if they're indigent? Just because he doesn't own his house doesn't make him indigent.

No dopey in your liberal elite tower, everyone is entitled to a public defender notwithstanding personal means.

My gosh. I am so sorry for all of the kids and parents at these schools and under this persons care. How horrific.
Trust instincts! If you are creeped out or uncomfortable by a head of school or teacher whose behavior seems unconventional and yet everyone “loves” him / her, go with your gut. Even if you work, figure out a way to volunteer at the school and on the playground and you will have a sense.
so sickened by this.

Dopey? Liberal elite tower?

You say everyone is entitled to a public defender, but only the indigent don't have to pay, right? In other words, if JC has money, he will have to pay for the public defender, right? If you have to pay for something, does that make you entitled to it?

An overview of the Federal Public Defender's Office says: "If a person cannot afford to hire an attorney, then the court can appoint a lawyer for the person. Under some circumstances, the court can order the person to pay part of the cost of the attorney during the case or to repay the cost of the legal services after the case is over." So if JC uses a public defender and has personal means, he may have to repay the costs of the legal services. If I'm wrong, please show me how/why.

This is so sad in so many levels.

I’m not a lawyer, but I hope that the fact that he had close access to children of the wealthy and powerful, translates into a longer sentence for him like life in prison. That’s what he deserves.
