Would lie about where you live...

to get your kids in a better school?

careful not to be caught, though.

No. We left DC and spent an arm and leg on a close-in house that feeds into excellent schools. I am very risk averse and very honest. I'd be looking over my shoulder constantly. The school boards around here have staff that do investigations...really they do. They will even follow ppl home, they will do house checks on the 'registered address', etc. if they suspect a discrepancy. The people allowing for the use of their address also face criminal charges.

I feel for the disadvantaged families stuck in crappy schools.

People try to do this in a certain NOVA neighborhood where I live, using a certain someones (I won't elaborate, for other thieves) address. Someone who get other unjust bonuses/breaks, I might add. I am not past reporting them, because it is illegal and our schools are crowded enough as it is. Besides the fact that it negates the census efforts and those who answer it, leaving legitimate residents with inadequate resources.

There are huge fines when you get caught, and you are pretty much watched forever. I am not above reporting anyone at all, and my neighbors would report too. Why should I or the honest neighbors have to pay for extra people clogging the system? We sacrificed a ton to live here. Sorry, sometimes that is what life entails. There is nothing "good" about breaking the law, basically lying and stealing so you can get better than what you want to actually pay for. This should not be okay with anyone. Helping someone out legitimately is one thing, but being in collusion to break the law is quite another.

Good God, no. Why are you teaching your children that it all right to lie to get something you shouldn't have. You will be caught and then what?

I heard from a Yu Ying parent that there are quite of few Yu Ying students who actually live in Maryland. I wonder if that's true for other well-regarded DC charters.

I'm with you and I would report someone in a New York minute.

No, I would not.

That said, I think it's easy for a lot of DCUMers (including myself) to say that. I understand why people do it.

Too risky!
Many counties are starting to hire a "hit squad" that actually go to the homes, during very random times (6am, Tuesday) to make sure that Mary and Bobby really do live there!

City of Falls Church does this.

We were approached by somebody for permission to use our address. We said 'no'. We knew we could face criminal charges if they were caught.

My parents did that for me. Our neighborhood was split right down the middle the year before I entered high school. I would have had to go to a HS really far away without the kids I had grown up with. We used someone's address. There were talks of "hit squads" then too, but no one ever bothered me, or my neighbor friend who actually went so far as to get dropped off at her fake address every day. I think the first couple of days of school my parents had me dropped of there, then we changed my drop off to down the street from my house, since many of my next store neighbors went to, and were zoned for, the school I was attending. I totally forgot about this.

Very interesting that of all the posts so far, only one person is concerned that it's wrong to teach your children to lie--to the teacher, to friends at school, and on any papers they're asked to complete at school.

Yep. ArlingtonCo. is cracking down. The schools are seeing unprecedented growth. The "star' schools are really checking hard....as there are 'sibling' waitlists for older siblings grandfathered in. Next year nobody can do a 'team school' but have to enroll at their actual neighborhood school. The only option if you don't like your 'hood school is to apply for one of the 'countywide' ones.

Too risky of a game to play. There is an office totally devoted to following up on 'suspicious' residency claims, e.g., multiple families claiming same address, etc.

Of course we feel that way....you'll find the Kindergarten is unaware of what the parents are doing.

This is disgusting. Thank God my parents were honest and taught us to be honest.
