Government Shutdown - September, 2025 Editiion

ACA was sold as reducing the cost of healthcare. Now costs have gone up and they want more and more subsidies to cover the premiums.
Of course some of the price increase is because of these same subsidies.

Look at what happened in education. Trump put a limit of $50,000 for student loans, and a college that was charging 65,000 now has lowered tuition to.... 50,000!

So what’s the answer? Huge portions of the country just don’t deserve healthcare? The current Congress is unable to solve the easiest problems these days so what’s the path forward?

That's a debate for another day not related to opening the govt.

They have started the theater portion.
Smithsonian and zoo closed, blamed on Democrats.

This is how Clinton, Obama won shutdown fights, closing the National Parks as well. Then they follow with Republicans' shutdown might cause the stoppage of Social Security checks.

Here it is even worse, because Democrats are the party of government, and Trump is choosing to shut down the government.

Money is not a fake thing, it's real. And when dollars run out, then things stop happening. When Trump almost stopped paying for the GPS satellites, we almost stopped having GPS. When Trump stops paying for the federal government, then we don't have a National Zoo. That's reality.

I mean, there are alternatives. Standardized pricing for one. Why does it cost less for healthcare without insurance than it does with insurance? Eleiminating health insurance and nationalizing medicine. Incentivizing healthcare professionals (if you make it to med school and pass the MCAT your tuition is free) so many many many ways to solve this problem.

That’s the problem. There’s never time for the debate, just like there’s never time to discuss gun violence. It’s always “too soon” until the issue fades away. If the government reopens, we all know there will be no discussion on healthcare. And we also know that the GOP won’t involve the Democrats in budget discussions but still expect their blind votes. So you’re effectively saying that huge portions of our country don’t deserve healthcare. Just own it.

Why? The GOP has refused to fund the government under Dem presidents w/o slashing budgets, etc. How is this different?

Republicans had this whole year to negotiate a budget bill, and they didn't bother to do it.

This is the truth. They didn't want to and now Trump is destroying all the "democrat programs" you know the ones poor MAGA live off of.

Republicans have always wanted to shut down the government. So they did it. Fox News hate stories about the Federal Government being reopened. The Dems are happy the government is shut down because the Federal government is being used to arrest and imprison democrats.

It is a good thing the US Military, DHS, FBI, DOJ, ICE, etc are not getting a paycheck. All those organizations and the people in them have declared war on Blue states and democrats.

If the Dems don’t want it opened it will remain closed. Hope it causes a lot of pain.

Republicans passed a CR in the House.

It's democrats who decided not to vote for it in the Senate.

Fact: Republicans did not shut down the government.

Democrats are required to vote for whatever the house passes?

They don't have to vote for it, but they can allow it to be brought up for a vote. Still unclear why this 60 vote threshold is there. I thought all budget bills are no filibuster.

That said, Republicans gain by having Democrats not vote for it, since they get to fire lots of federal workers and downsize the government.

all of the firing and downsizing doesn't make a dent in the national debt or deficit spending. All it does is degrade the services we, as taxpayers, receive.

Protects the minority party and is to encourage compromise. Having control of a chamber does not mean the minority party has to acquiesce to the majority demands. Why have a Congress then? R's have benefitted from the Filibuster in the past. Both sides have.

As for the firing of workers, pat yourself on the back. But the fact is, it will cost the government a LOT Of money just from the lawsuits alone. So good job?

the GOP controls the White House, House of Representatives and the US Senate. They could open the government today, if they wanted to. But there is no reason to ask the dems, who have not had a seat at the table and bear no responsibility for the contents of the BBB, to go along with a bill that is so damaging to the US taxpayers. And frankly, more red states get damaged by this since they are mostly taker states with more government dependency than the blue states. So go for it.

THIS. It is truly amazing that Americans have absolutely no (bleeping) clue how their own government works.
