Absolutely, but given that this thread is titled "Private & Independent Schools"......

A magnet is similar to private schools in that it had competitive admissions and doesn't have to "take everyone." So yes, you will see strong admissions from these schools...especially TJ.

A magnet school is a public school. This thread is about private schools.

So what. I am a private school parent and I am impressed!! That doesn't mean I am going to send my kids to a magnet (for other reasons), but these kids are amazing in my book.

It’s a data point for competitive applicants from the area. If you want less data, for some reason, then take all of the public and parochial schools off of the list.

There are no parochial school on the list.

Are you serious? Not to knock TJ, but the 2023 Instagram college placements were fine, even good, but not amazing. There are over 500 graduating TJ seniors, and 10 students posted Ivy destinations. Most 2023 students are attending state flagships. That’s good, but let’s not overstate the case.

You do realize that many (probably most) are probably donut families that would need to rely on merit or in state options. They don't have the wealth factor of private schools.

That’s another reason why public schools (magnet or not) shouldn’t be discussed on this thread. Top Private and public school students are generally two different socioeconomic groups. There’s some overlap here and there, but not enough to include public schools in this discussion.

Are you able to just “send “ your kids to a magnet?

I am not impressed and you are comparing schools with 500 grads to schools with 100. It’s a waste of space and energy.

How can you compare 500 grads to STA’s 75? You can’t.

I never mentioned Ivies. Most of their graduates are going to T30 colleges and that is very impressive. And yes they are able to achieve that without paying a hefty price for their high school and while competing alongside 500 extremely competent peers so good for them!

I mentioned Ivies, and that’s what I look for first. T30/50 mostly state schools, are nice (although the University Central Florida and Ave Maria definitely don’t make the cut). However, I’m simply not interested in VT, UMD, GT, Purdue, Ohio State, UNC, etc…Why don’t you start a similar thread for magnets in the PUBLIC SCHOOL forum?!? There may be more parents there who are excited by those universities.

We also are not that interested in large public schools with the exception of 1-2. Overall applying from private highschool to private college intentionally.

Let’s not forget that TJ has made a concerted effort to diversify its student body by admitting more kids with IEP’s, learning disabilities, and less than stellar GPA’s. Sorry if I sound like a jerk, but I expect their college admissions to reflect that moving forward.

How much does the college counselor and their connections and how well they know reps really matter ?

No. Similar to NCS, Sidwell no longer places such calls to colleges. Colleges no longer accept such calls.
