Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Discovery is cumbersome. I don't like it. West County, Oak Hill, Floris are better. Too bad Sully is troublesome. I think it is short and sweet. |
| All the theme names like "Discovery," "Independence," "Freedom," and "Innovation" sound so cheesy to me. It's bad enough we have Liberty MS. They sound like something you'd come across in a MAGA suburb in the Deep South. |
No, Hon. What gives you that idea. . Those sound like names picked by Sandy Evans--remember "Justice?" Don't think she is MAGA. |
But, I agree, they are "cheesy." |
FWIW: Atlanta suburban high schools https://www.niche.com/places-to-live/search/suburbs-with-the-best-public-schools/m/atlanta-metro-area/?msockid=0603ff2e02b366203331e9ad033667d8 Is suburban Birmingham MAGA enough for you? https://high-schools.com/directory/al/cities/birmingham/ |
The Niche crap isn't the name of schools, just suburbs. |
John Foster Dulles was a patriotic American under Eisenhower and leader against communism during the cold war. Enough with the "christian nationallist" accusation nonsense. |
| Given that Carson is next door, is there a way to turn it into a "Secondary School" or does that mean that it has to be all under one building? Not sure how Robinson, Hayfield, etc. are structured. |
Saves them from renaming later. |
Carson high school would be ok. Isn’t it south county middle and south county high? |
I like Discovery. It plays into how it’s right down the street from the air and space museum. Although the space shuttle is moving to Texas. Discovery Square is full of good astronaut names, but I agree that it shouldn’t be named after a person. |
And a permanent reminder that Carson MS was designed to be expanded into a Secondary (-; |

I would vote for Floris High School.
Why? Because that name is not onlu geographical but also HISTORICAL. There used to be a vocational (agricultral) high school in Frying Pan Farm, named Floris Vocational High School. motto of Floris Vocational High School's graduating class of 1925 was "On Life's Highway." Their class colors were white and green and, suitably, their class flower was the white rose. All of this information is documented on a commencement invitation that is part of the Fairfax County Park Authority's Museum Collection. https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/artifacts/floris-vocational-commencement |
Good suggestion. Better than Discovery. "Floris Falcons" nod to Airport and Air and Space Museum |
I like the "Back to the Future" part of "Floris HS." Sometimes the geographic names can be controversial. The original working name for what's now Lewis HS was "Franconia HS" but that name was jettisoned because people from Springfield felt demeaned. The School Board decided that naming high schools after esteemed individuals would avoid such conflicts and that approach lasted for a few years (examples: Lee, Stuart, Madison, Woodson, Marshall, Edison, Jefferson). Little did they know they were creating even bigger problems later... |
