Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Excited to see the $100,000 study FCPS commissions for new name but still tell teachers in classroom there is no additional money to be found to help them |
Wait... what?! FCPS is spending $100,000 on a new name study?? You cannot be serious. Assign it to the kids who might get rezoned there and have them research the name as a civics project. Give the winner a $1000.00 scholarship and 4 runners up a $500.00 scholarship. Do the same for the mascot. Have 1 or 2 gatehouse employees tgat we are already paying to work the project of researching the 5 finalists for controversy. Have one of the high school stat or computer science classes develop the survey for voting on the einners, incorporating it with a lesson on how to protect surveys from bot responses, using software snd programs FCPS already pays huge licensing fees to. Done. Total cost, $6000.00 in scholarship money for FCPS students. |
LOL! When Oak Hill Post Office was opened, the community voted on the name and chose Oak Hill. The post office is one mile from the new high school. |
those are good ideas but I am hoping that PP who said $100K was joking. |
| They could call it Innovation High School after the nearby Metro Stop. Mascot could be the Intimidators. The Innovation name could also tie into the Superintendent's pet project for an Aviation/AI academy at the school. |
Yes, bad joke, but tells where FCPS is now and how it irrationally spends $ that wasn't clearly joke |
|
Are f’ing kidding me? $100K on a name study? Yet programs keep getting dropped at our HS. No more Latin as a foreign language, but great that we have a spiffy name. That $100k could have paid for a Latin teacher.
FCPS needs to get back to the basics. Stay out of politics (eg no need for messaging on bonds), and focus on its core mission - educating students. They are deaf and not hearing what parents want. And I’m voting no on the bond. They mismanage money they are given. Why would I want them to have more? |
That was a joke. There is no name study you dolts |
Given the demographics of the schools likely to feed into KAA, “Intimidators” would be leading by the nose. “Olympiads” might be more feasible given the focus on math and science competitions. |

Good names:
1. Oak Hill HS 2. Discovery HS (though this name would break naming traditions) Not good names: 1. McLearen HS= too close to McLean HS 2. West County HS= too close to Westfield, West Potomac, and West Springfield HS 3. Dulles HS= Two issues: 1. Dulles Airport is in Loudoun County, and 2. John Foster Dulles was a Christian Nationalist. 4. Sully HS= already a controversial name for the district. Don't add to the controversy. 5. Carson HS= FCPS middle schools are (usually, other than Herndon, Rocky Run, and maybe a few others?) named after authors. High schools are usually named after geographical areas or politicians (Lewis, Madison, Jefferson). |
Don't really care much but isn't Oak Hill too close to Oakton? |
| West Central? |
Your logic on #2 doesn't hold up. We do have Westfield, West Potomac, and West Springfield, along with South Lakes and South County, without big problems, so we could have "West County." It's simple and accurate. |
Good point. Discovery HS is a decent name, even if it breaks naming traditions. |
"Central" sounds inner city. People refer to Lewis as serving "Central Springfield" when they want to make it sound even poorer. |
