What did these places do that made their CS exemplary?

I got very good customer service this month when I ordered some shirts on sale from Mini Boden. One of the shirts wasn't available so they sent me a letter and a gift certificate for a future purchase for $20.

Foggy Bottom Trader Joe's. DS has a food allergy and they always call Head Office to get more info on their products for me.

Zappos. Although they always seem to do something wrong and send me a $20 credit. I've now received more in credit than I've spent with them.

Usually, great customer service means fixing problems quickly and without hassle. A service or job well done and/or an excellent product at a fair price w/ informed and friendly, helpful employees. Timely service. (Freedom Carpet, Jordan Kitts, Dan and Bryan's) All of that AND easy returns (Nordstrom, LLBean, Land's End and Zappos)

Often, it can mean a company does all this and then goes out of its way to solve your problem or get your what you want....well above and beyond whatever you might have expected them to do. This happened to me a few years ago when a company (and I wish I remembered who it was) installed our home theater speakers and there were all kinds of problems they couldn't predict. The guys did SOO much more than they had to, without charging me any extra. And spent HOURS getting it just right. It was way beyond the simple install we had all expected and that I had paid for. And they were on the phone with the scheduler the whole time so they could dispatch someone else to these guys appts. They were awesome. I'm going to try to remember who that was now.

To the PP who asked for specifics:

Endless. FREE next day shipping (yes, even during Christmas rush), and FREE next day return if there is a problem. Credit was back on my card within 5 business days. I was floored. I'm still waiting for a credit from Ann Taylor, almost 60 days later.

Cox has the friendliest and most polite reps I have ever encountered. The fact that they know what they are doing is just gravy. Every time I called, I got a live person within 2-3 minutes, my issue was resolved with one call and once I even got a credit for something I didn't feel was their fault, just a timing issue. Awesome!
