I'm trying to find some relief in the idea that Congress can't reappropriate more money without being in session. POTUS can bloviate all he wants, but there's less guarantee that any of the insane stuff coming out of him a'la King George III will actually come to fruition.

Maybe when Trump is done celebrating the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas he can negotiate a ceasefire between Mike Johnson and Chuck Schumer.

Once people really miss a whole paycheck there is going to be a lot of pressure on both sides to do something. And that is about 2 weeks away. I remember in 2019 the Coast Guard wasn’t getting paid because they’re funded by DHS even though they’re basically part of the military.

i worked as government contractor at GSA and Pentagon. you could fire 50% of the employess and the offices would NOT skip a beat.

and everyone claimed they were so so busy, and yet they left at 3:30 every day. and still found time to work out/ play bball every day.

As a former fed manager I agree with the fact that there are some very "unproductive" employees. They all have manages. The issue IMO is the senior management and HR won't allow any meaningful discipline to occur. They'd rather pass along/park these employees and ignore them so the agency doesn't get sued. It's a big part of why I left. They ones who do work, are amazingly competent and dedicated and I really do miss their commitment to the mission and drive.

This happens every single day in the private sector as well. I don't know why people are acting like every employee at their non-fed job is a golden child genius. I have worked with a TON of incompetent idiots over the years who should have been fired. That's just the population.

And the nepotism and cronyism of the private sector: someone's kid, or nephew, or friend's daughter gets hired just because of who they know. Or who they sleep with, or whatever. Why are Trump, Johnson and Thune so deadset against making a deal on the ACA subsidies? The public support for them is overwhelming. 78% of voters want them extended. 57% of self-identified MAGA Republicans want them extended!

Yep. There is zero political pressure to get anything done. And now that the military is getting paid, that removes another pressure point.

It's basically up to the Air Traffic Controllers. When they decide to check out from their high pressure jobs because they need to do something else to pay the mortgage, it's over.

Other feds are going to have to figure something out if this is still going in a couple months. And lots of contracts that were funded for a month or two past Oct. 1 will start running out of money. The people who make the social security and Medicare checks go out will stop coming in. The contractors who do all the maintenance at military bases, including fixing planes and helicopters and vehicles will stop coming in.

Yep. My spouse supports the military directly. And they're being told to expect salary payments to stop soon. Voight etc. are taking money from other pots and moving it (not sure if they are reprogramming or doing whatever tf they want) to pay for the military folks, but not civilian. Not only is that a dick move, but MANY coworkers are saying that they "will not work for free." I guess we'll have to see how it plays out.
