Once Hunt & Buck are back, and if all others stay and vote, McCarthy could also win without actually getting a vote from any of the 6 remaining holdouts. If he could get 3 to vote “present” then he could afford 3 others voting against him. Would be 216-212-3-3 w/ a magic # of 216

Also in this scenario (all 434 in attendance), McCarthy could win by getting one of the holdouts to vote for him + 1 other to vote “present” and the other 4 defecting. Would be 217-212-4-1 and the magic number would be 217.

No, because he's conceded so much, and has essentially emasculated himself and his position. The wingnuts are going to be in positions of power, and the whole country is going to be the worse for it.

If McCarthy has acceded to the HFC demand of 3 seats on the Rules Committee then he has effectively signed the death warrant for his nascent speakership. The HFC will control everything coming to the floor for a vote including, most importantly, appropriations and the debt ceiling. Everything can be ground to a halt. They can now burn it all down by a debt default. His transformation into a modern day political Reek is now fully realized. It’s the pound of flesh extracted from McCarthy’s backside for the final straw: passage of the $1.7T Omnibus, which defeated their goal of more tax cuts for the wealthy and gutting government entitlements and other spending. And if they get outmaneuvered in Cimmittee then they come headhunting with a motion to vacate.

Why Gaetz hates McCarthy so much even though McCarthy let him continue to oversee the FBI while he was under federal investigation.
