someone on Threads referred to JD as "Hillbilly Vanilli" and now I can't stop calling him that.

There he asked how long the store had been in business, then said "I had no idea if it was 2 years or 20 years or 40 years." If you want people to think you're connecting with them you would know that going in and base your conversation on that (whether it's been tough times, greatest doughnut shop in 3 counties, enthusiastic startup, whatever). Even aside from his response to the counter workers.

I had an interview for a job I ended up turning down, but they were delighted when I commented about a company that was delivering heating oil to houses in Maine 120 years ago becoming a large and growing benefits management company. And it wasn't a very high level job. Did he never have to interview for anything?

He should know better but also his team is letting him down again.

For a guy whose mom is an addict you really would think he would have more empathy for the fact that not every family has extended family that can help in this way.

The more I read about him, the more I feel bad for his wife. Friends of friends know her and I think she’s actually a pretty normal nice person. This is the lesson learned that YLS is a weird place and you should not marry someone after only dating them at YLS—give it a couple years test run out of school to kick the tires.

He was raised by his grandparents because his parents were not able to (deadbeat father and alcoholic mother).

His children were raised by their grandmother because their parents were too busy to be bothered to raise them. Vance is not deadbeat, but he was a largely absent father. His wife was busy with her job, so her mother took a sabbatical to raise their children for them until her clerkship was over.

No wonder he thinks that grandparents will drop everything to parent for absentee parents. But not every family can do that. And he is completely clueless about issues that affect real American families, not the groomed pets of billionaire venture capitalists.
