How so? MCPS's policy should absolutely be to stay open. Schools should be the last thing to close, not the first.

Mcps does not make the decision for anything other than schools. Why do we need the government to shut things down to behave responsibly?

OK, then don't close anything. That's fine. But the schools need to stay open.

I'm not saying we need to shut down anything. But if we're going to shut things down, or implement harsh measures, there are a lot of things that should be done before closing schools. It is the responsibility of MCPS to educate students, not to protect old and sick people from catching COVID.

MCPS can educate in person or virtually. Thankfully we are in 2021, going into 2022 so we have options, including hybrid and virtual. MCPS has no authority to do anything outside of the schools.

If parents want safe schools, they need to behave in a safe manor outside schools. Clearly parents don't care or many would be behaving very differently.

MCPS is clear that they will stay open except if the state shuts them down.

In person school doesn't NEED to stay open. You WANT it to stay open. If you want schools to stay open, what sacrifices are you willing to make to have that happen?

MCPS should have never stopped Hybrid. Those who want to come to school and learn in the classroom, and those who wanted to learn from their home by watching the teacher teach, both options should have been available and this would have allowed more flexibility.

In PHS at least, the student who was sent to school (I think she was a 9th grade Humanities kid, not a SMCS kid) by her parents inspite of being positive and symptomatic because they did not want her to miss classes , would have remained at home and not jeopardized so many classmates, teachers and their family members.

MCPS offered virtual. You had the option to go virtual and choose in person. So, stop complaining. Hybrid with classes of 30+ kids is near impossible to do. Those selfish parents would have sent their child into school regardless of if there was hybrid or not. They simply don't care nor do many others, which is why we are having the spread. Its only going to get worse after the holidays.

Why should kids have to sacrifice even more to protect the elderly and unvaccinated? Why don't they sacrifice? How many senior citizens are isolating? Closing schools shouldn't be under any sort of consideration while the elderly are out socializing with family and friends.

The kids have sacrificed 1.5 years of in person school - shut up and study inside if your terrified. You won’t be missed.
