I'm sorry, PP, but that's on you. It would have been prudent for you to choose virtual when that was an option. But you didn't, so now you're stuck with the consequences of your decision.

Well the deadline was too early to make a decision. Everything looks very promising in June and vaccine efficacy was reported to be miraculous. Then suddenly in July Israel has outbreaks and breakthrough infections are more and more common. You can’t blame the parents for making decisions based on the situation. Now I just wish MCPS will consider drastically changed situations to accommodate more virtual students.

This again. PP, I'm sorry you were deluded to think Covid was gone, I really do. There was always going to be a risk that your child would get covid in school- since you can't handle any small uptick in risk, it would have been prudent for you to apply just in case, submitting an application itself was not binding.

Call MCPS- you could always lie and say your kid has a new health issue. Otherwise buck up and figure it out- we had to provide a lot of support with virtual learning last year, I don't know that homeschooling would have been any more of a time sink. It would also give you more flexibility.

Don’t forget MCPS has admission criteria for virtual academy: you have to have extenuating circumstances with supporting documents. It isn’t easy to apply.

There are a lot of posters on DCUM who apparently want what they want, when they want it. But MCPS is not obligated to provide that. Everyone had 3 options:

1. Regular school
2. Apply to the Virtual Academy
3. Homeschool or private school or something else

If you decided not to apply to the Virtual Academy, then that leaves the other 2 options for you.

In the immortal words of Neil Peart, "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."

Yes. And let’s not forgot all of us parents who had virtual crammed down our throats while
We helplessly watched cousins and freinds kids go to school all over the country last year. We dealt with MCPS’s decision. Now you have to.

For anyone who thought COVID was over, the Delta variant is a game changer. Just had a colleague who is fully vaxed call in sick and is in quarantine.

People get sick, from SARS-CoV-2 as from other things. It's very, very, very rare to get seriously ill from covid if you're vaccinated, let alone die.

So no, not a game changer.

It actually is over as far as these things go. We're in the new normal now. The virus is out there and will mutate every year. Get vaccinated and live your life. If you're under 12, you're at very little risk beyond needing some Kleenex. Like virtually every other aspect of life, there are exceptions and bad outcomes. Humans aren't immortal.

I did apply. I don't need to lie as it can go by parent health issues, and I have well documented health issues. Its not a small uptick in risk when they are bring large groups of kids together, no testing or other precautions and kids not vaccinated.

Why don't you tell that to the parents whose kids have died of covid or in the ICU right now. There is a big risk with Delta.

Actually we don't have to deal with the situation. We have options.

The only think that will be better than ever with MCPS will be covid.

There is a big risk with life. Hopefully an EUA is approved for under-12 some time this year. I don't think the majority of parents will choose vaccination for that age group, but at least they'll have the choice. After that, all the missing pieces will have been filled and it's no longer a conversation.

0.1%-1.9% of all child COVID-19 cases resulted in hospitalization.

Children were 0.00%-0.26% of all COVID-19 deaths, and 8 states reported zero child deaths.

In states reporting (43 states, NYC, Puerto Rico, and Guam), 0.00%-0.03% of all child COVID-19 cases resulted in death.

https://services.aap.org/en/pages/2019-novel-coronavirus-covid-19-infections/children-and-covid-19-state-level-data-report/

Devastating if it's your child, of course. But very, very, very rare.

So you’re making excuses for others who were too u decided to apply in time? I’m confused.

I had hoped mops would be more responsible with reopening.

What is it you expect them to do? It's five days in-person. There's no more hiding from the virus with hybrid/virtual-for-all nonsense. They'll mask, and that's the new normal (or better than) across the US.
