That is false information about the CDC, and you should stop repeating it.

MCPS has a Virtual Academy option for people like you, who don't want their kids in school.

Again MCPS never made virtual academy as an option for people with no extenuating circumstances. And the deadline has passed. So it’s not even relevant.

It was your responsibility to apply in time for the deadline.

If you didn't apply for the Virtual Academy, and you also don't consider MCPS safe enough to send your child, then you will either have to find a different option, or send your child to MCPS anyway.

Stop blaming other parents who have a second thought. And it was not easy to apply as you need supporting documents to demonstrate extenuating circumstances. Many people couldn’t get any supporting documents.

I'm the PP you're responding to, and I'm not blaming. I'm just stating facts.

I’m also stating a fact that virtual academy was not really an option for families with no extenuating circumstances.

By design

It should be open to everyone. We tried applying. They will not even acknowledge the request as I've emailed and called several times.

Awww. It kind of sucks doesn’t it when MCPS doesn’t offer you exactly what you want. Last year I wanted my vision impaired severely disabled kindergartener to you know GO TO SCHOOL and Mcps told us to pound sand all year. We made other arrangements. Suggest you do the same.

Me too. My kids wanted five days in-person last year. MCPS didn’t give them the chance.

So you guys are so bitter and want parents who wish to choose virtual to also experience the same?

Not bitter at all. I’m quite pleased that VA has been limited to those most in need of virtual services. Everybody else goes back. MCPS didn’t double down on its mistakes from last year.

Most of us want our kids in person but we don’t want Covid. We will not have vaccines, behavior, testing, quarantine, and other precautions. But, really what could go wrong?

Not learning loss. If you don't want Covid, you need to find a way to go back in time. Behavior, testing, quarantine, etc. are a relic of 2020. You get vaccines for the 12+ crowd now, and under-12 crowd later.

Sending our kids who cannot be vaccinated with no precautions is irresponsible. What do you think will happen with 1000 kids in close contact? We will not have learning loss.

The biggest issue with DL last year was that they only went 4 days a week otherwise it was perfectly productive for anyone who made a modest effort.

There were lots of ways to make DL better. It should have been 5 days a week. If you don't have your camera on, you fail the class. If you don't participate, you fail the class. If you don't do the assignments by the deadline and don't get an extension, you fail the class. Homework, especially in math and english to reinforce what is being taught. No class time for homework assignments not done to allow kids to play catch up. Not 50%. Parents get nightly emails from teachers stating what the assignments are and where they can find them. If a teacher cannot teach or show up, notify the parents so the kids don't show up. No unsupervised break out rooms.

We do private summer school classes and they are very different. MCPS needs to hold parents and students accountable. Stop socially passing them. You aren't helping kids if they don't have a good foundation to move up to the next level.

We will figure it out just like when there is an outbreak at school and school is canceled for two weeks you'll figure it out. We are absolutely taking responsibility and ours will be fine no thanks to people like you. I'd rather your kids be the great social experiment and see how fall goes before considering sending mine is given no safety precautions.

That's fine with me. There, now we're both happy. Hooray!

Nah, let's just get back to in-person. That's the best solution.

No, your kids get punished because you expect a world that's not coming back. I'm sure your kids are counting the days until they turn 18.

DP

You know, it’s interesting that MCPS is choosing to spend money on these types of marketing emails. Almost like they’re ‘recruiting’ videos. Why does MCPS care if students leave? I have no idea why MCPS is spending money on convincing parents to stick with MCPS, but they are.

Which tells me that all of the posters like this PP who say ‘Good riddance’ to the families who want to go private are full of crap. MCPS, at least, doesn’t want too many families to leave. Must be a reason for that.

How much money? Please let us know. How much does it cost to send an e-mail to tell former MCPS parents about MCPS's plans for the fall?

It costs at least $250,000. That e-mail is the full time job of a MCPS administrator with a take home car.

Huh?

I'd love to but we didn't stay home and keep them safe for over a year to have them mix with your kids makes zero sense as the risk of covid is to high without testing, distancing or anything else. Why should they be further punished with COVID just because you don't care about my kids or even your kids?

We have a nice family/home life. Mine enjoy being with us and are in no rush to return ad they don't want covid after hearing about it from friends. They are looking forward to college and graduate school after 18 as they have loving parents who save and will pay for it. And, when they are done they are welcome back to save money to buy a home of their own. However, given yours need to go in person and be away from you now as much as possible, I can only imagine what your home is like. Pre-coovid, they were probably always over my house and the ones who keep calling to come back. Saving all the money on food, activities, games and much more has a been great for my kids college funds.

Meh, my kids will be in-person, needs or not. Hopefully you've been accepted into the VA or lining up your home schooling materials. Everybody wins.

Anonymous wrote:Wow. To all the parents commenting how MCPS is getting too lax with covid and doesn’t care about keeping kids safe: wow. I did not see you coming. Congrats on the element of surprise. I mean, MCPS was pretty much last place in getting kids back to school this year under the banner of “safety.” The thing is, what you are complaining about—normal school with masks— was basically what most of the country did in 2020, before vaccines. Not crazy red states, but totally normal places like affluent educated suburbs of Chicago for example. This isn’t radical. It’s mainstream and MCPS was behind the eight ball. Way behind. But again if you don’t like it homeschool and private online are always available just like those of us horrified by MCPS’s 2020 plan had to make other arrangements now you need to make other arrangements. God speed.

Agreed. I mean what's the surprise? Everybody should have been able to project what five days in-person meant. The era of zero risk, hyperventilating over every case is over in this country.

My niece started school in Mississippi three days ago. Deep South. Science deniers. Last week it was no masks. This week? Masks are mandatory and parents should be prepared to pivot for virtual learning. It’s not over. (I want it to be let’s be clear on my stance)

Lamar county? We have family there too. The vaccination rates are abysmal- I actually thought with the university there and relatively large healthcare system that the Hattiesburg area would have a higher vaccination rate at least compared to the rest of the state but it’s pathetic, and even worse for the 12-18 yos.

They are not happy because they want everyone to be “happy” in DL with them. If her kids were really that happy and thriving in DL she wouldn’t care if others made a different decision. Her insecurity is pretty obvious.
