Do people really always tip 10-20% on carry out orders? Still?

Are you handing out cash to your local grocery store and retail workers as well?

Google'd out of curiosity and several links claim the to-go standard is 10% with many leaving 20%? I worked in the service industry in high school and for a year in college, so I thought I was a decent tipper. How is leaving a $5 (to $10!?) to the gal (hostess/cashier?) for every $50 order she hands off fair to normal waitresses and bartenders who have to actually work?

Honestly I assume the overwhelming majority of to-go orders don't tip 10 or 20%, they actually tip $0?

I always tipped 10% on take out before the pandemic. I tip 20% now because restaurant staff needs the help. I assume that tips are pooled and split for take out.

My local grocery store workers are unionized and paid pretty well. I shop at Target and they start at $15 per hour. It's not necessary.

We know of one restaurant that cannot reopen as they cannot get enough staff as UI pays more. And other ones are struggling for staff too.

They should probably pay a living wage, then. It's not just unemployment. Restaurant workers are moving to other industries because restaurant pay is terrible and it's dangerous during a pandemic.

Clasism and elitism all through this thread. People don't want to tip or raise the minimum wage for these "low skilled" workers. This is why we are doomed a a a society...because we make it increasingly difficult for people without degrees to support themselves, NOT because those people are receiving UI.

And let me guess... you don't eat McDonald's or Chik-fil-A?

Honestly, as I go out more, yes. I’m keeping extra $5 and $10 to give out to anyone in a service field who I think might have had their income compromised. Just putting extra kindness and grace out there.

That is very nice of you!

I always tipped 10 percent on takeout. During the pandemic 20. As someone once pointed out on this forum, no they did not wait on you during your entire meal. But did they drive it across town and deliver it to your doorstep so you could stay safe.

You described delivery not take out.

DP. No but I never tipped them. At restaurants prior to the pandemic I did dine in and tip & the takeout tip I did during corona was to make up for that.

When labor is a scarce commodity, you pay more for it. You don’t remove a social safety net to drive down the cost of labor or any other commodity. People earning more from unemployment are also helping keep other businesses afloat. They aren’t hoarding the extra money and Scrooge McDucking in it. They bought clothing for their kids and got their cars repaired. Google money multiplier effect. The right wing forgets about that.

But you also don't skew the market by paying people to do nothing when there are jobs available. All of those benefits are being paid by the labor of current or future workers who kept working.

NP here. Do a lot of people not understand the difference between delivery and takeout? I, of course, tip for delivery service. But I do not tip for takeout at fast food or fast casual restaurants.

Why would I tip the DoorDash guy more to drive my order from the same place if I order for 3 people vs 2? Yes, the food cost more, but the delivery for him/her was the same. Stupid.

That's why I switched to a flat $5 tip for carryout.

I tip by distance for DoorDash. I consider that delivery and not carry out.

Delivery is different than carry out. For carry out you have to drive to the restaurant and pick up your own food. Jordache, Uber eats and those delivery services, or delivery. I think a lot of people are confusing them.

You only tip $5 more when the delivery guy picks up your order, driving 20 minutes to your home, hand over the food to you (or leave at your door, and then send you a picture of the food)?

It is so ridiculous that some ppl shaming others for not tipping with a take out order. Do Doordash delivery guys give part of the tip to the restaurant when they pick up the food for you? If not, why do the restaurant expect ppl who go to pick up the food themselves to pay a tip?
