Ivy Leagues plus MIT, CalTech, and that tier of school is a reach for EVERYONE. I was surprised he was waitlisted by CMU though.

I think you need to have an excellent transcript to get into CMU, not just an excellent SAT.

CMU accepts by college. If he applied for CS, CMU is as hard an admit as MIT. (I have no idea what he applied for)

1540 is an excellent score. Only around 9000 students out of 2 million sat test takers get 1540+
The student in question got 1590 and only around 1400 students out of 2 million get a 1590+

But that doesn’t count super scores, though, right? Lots more can superstore their way there.

1590 is not enough. Even if super scoring were not possible, 1400 other kids have that same score. And many thousands have scores in that neighborhood. That needs to be accompanied by great grades in the most rigorous classes and other accomplishments.

It more than a possibility but I don't see how this time too has anything to do with discrimination. There is no way a short list of AP grades, one sat score, and 2 sat subject test scores will convince us that this student was a shoe in for those insanely difficult colleges.

Why would anyone feel sorry for this guy. He was dumb enough only to apply to Penn State and UMD and Ivies and equivalents, except CMU. Where were the applications to schools like Emory, Wash U, Northwestern, and Wesleyan and other SLACs. We are not a society based on test scores alone, which (ironically) is a criticism of many of the Asian education systems.
