Just for fun: names that are off-limits

My name is Karen. Funnily enough, my mother is "a Karen". She's never called the police on black people, but she forever wants to speak to the manager. I sometimes hesitate when I have to give my name to a black person and sometimes make a joke of it. "Karen, but I'm not *A* Karen - I was named way before this, in the 70's."

40s/50s names. I know they're so popular now and some of them are just adorable, but I couldn't name my own kid Mabel/Myrtle/Oliver/Hank. Yes, I know a toddler Myrtle, I think because of Harry Potter, and it's just awful and don't know why you'd do that to your child.

We got two sister dogs and named them Bailey and Hailey. I was pushing for Charlie and Bailey (Party of Five was such a great show!) but nobody else was into that.

Melody
Meadow
Daisy
Summer
Prairie
Misty
Willow

Might be more common in the Midwest than DMV (I have several cousins/second cousins in South Dakota with names above)

I love many of these! The only one I really don't like is Misty. The rest are pretty though. I have known several girls and women named Summer and they are universally wonderful. Something about that name. But I also love Daisy and Willow.

I think this is kind of a feeling against names that are too obvious-- along with the nature-like names above I'd include any names related to virtues. They just sound too obvious, labeling, I don't know, they just give me all negative feels. Like:

Charity (also the name of a gorgeous girl who flirted with a previous boyfriend so... don't like that name on many levels, LOL)
Joy
Grace
Faith
Blessing (this may be more common in other countries; I had a couple friends with this name in Zimbabwe)
Pax (for peace)

Ugh... may also be that I grew up in a very conservative Christian household so anything reminding me of kind of morally black and white expectations makes me annoyed

My husband knew a Teddy growing up that he hated… so Theodore was out for us.
I have a super popular 1970s name, so top 10 were out.
I also dislike the Celtic names with insane spellings. I think people are trying way too hard when they do that.
I knew a family - dad was Ron. So he named his kids Ron Jr and Veronica - Ronnie as her nickname.

My mother had a hair stylist whose name was Betty. Her husband was Joe. Her son was Joey and her daughter Betty Jo.

Men like this must have an oversized ego. Firstly he probably expects to give his kids his own surname and not consider the mom's surname. Then he gives his kids *his own first name*!
What kid of woman agrees to this stuff? In it for his money?

I think it’s cultural and class based haha. My parents/aunts/uncles were poor to working class blacks. My parents made it into the MC later.

My Dad is named something like Daniel. My brother and I are Daniel Jr and Danielle. Literally all my cousins have similar naming conventions (named after father - Stephen has Stephen Jr and Stephanie.)

Oh, and names that would be mispronounced a lot! We considered a name with a final syllable that could be pronounced LINE or LEEN. Nope.

Same. We loved the name Thea for a girl, but I thought it was always pronounced “Thee-ah”. When we found out it can be “Thay-ah” or even “Tay-ah”, we crossed it off our list. My DH has a similar simple name that you’d think would cause no issues, but we’ve spent a lot of time in Spanish speaking countries and his name gets butchered, so we know how frustrating. It is to have a short, vowel-heavy name that is basically always mispronounced. Not worth it!
