Wait a minute. I am a big supporter of Prep but I’m calling foul on this comment above. We can afford full pay at Prep and any other IAC school and would happily have paid it if that school was the right fit. My son is not an elite athlete and he chose GC over Prep. In fact, he is academically gifted and felt that GC offered him more options than Prep for what he was interested in. Every student is different and generalizations like the ones PP made are false.

Prep is not trying to be like the WCAC schools athletically. Prep is a strong academic school in a good athletic conference - the IAC - with other strong academic schools (i.e. STA, Landon).

Horrible example. Prep is a marginal academic school and NOWHERE near STA in academic rigor or student body. Witness the many Mater Dei kids who go there.

Agree. Lots of people don't even consider Prep due to commute among other factors. And sports is rarely the prime consideration for choosing a high school. The Prep booster who has been frequenting this board for the past few weeks is getting tiresome.

Actually this is where you are so very wrong. Prep is actually very similar to STA academically. I have know several families at both schools and even families with sons who attended both schools. These families all said academics were very similar to each other and both top notch.

STA is the favorite of the so-called “elite”. A great place if you want to be surrounded by the Ivy League and NESCAC obsessed. It’s a place for K Street lawyers, political consultants, and politicians to glad-hand one another and talk about their own educational resumes and their plans for their sons. Their children, of course, want to follow suit because they have been raised to do so.

Witness the “superiority” implicit in the “Our boys are a lot smarter than those Catholics at Mater Dei”.

Too rich for our blood. But it’s fine if that’s your taste. But if the concept of “the elite” triggers your gag reflex, it might not be for you.

I’m an STA parent and I totally agree with your comments. Not all STA parents, but many do think their boys are superior because they are at STA. When in fact they are just lucky their parents could afford to send them and have the connections to get them in because most of the lifers can’t compete with the 20+ boys that come in in high school, when the standards for acceptance are much tougher than 4th or even 6th grade
