Pp, you are incorrect. I have a dog and I don't let her go on anyone's lawn to pee or poop. I agree with you op. The guy was out of line. Keep yelling at him and you can respond that you are only responsible for your lawn. |
Actually the poster above yours is technically correct. There are laws about picking up dog poop but not for urine. May be rude (personally I don't think it always is, context is important) but it isn't illegal. No cop would give someone a ticket over this. |
Freaking out about dogs peeing on the grass that is within 6’ leash distance to the road is as stupid and pointless as expecting birds to never crap on your car. It’s just a part of life. If you don’t like suburban living then you should buy a few acres of land so that you can finally relax. |
Aside from the actual laws, which in DC are pretty much nonexistent besides keeping them on a leash, I don't think there is any real consensus on all the rules. Personally, I think my own rules are a decent balance between being respectful and not being ridiculous:
Leash at all times Always pick up poop My dog can go anywhere that his 5' leash will allow him to while my feet are still on the sidewalk except for obviously off limits places like flower beds or anywhere behind a fence, even a tiny little one. Anything he can reach in those previous rules he can pee on. If any property owner asks me not to let him go or pee somewhere, I apologize and make a mental note that that property is off limits. If anyone is approaching, I rein in the leash to make sure my dog can't reach them or their pets. |
+1 Best answer yet. |
In Fairfax county, that strip technically does not belong to the homeowner (I think vdot or some other county entity owns it). |
I never said it was illegal. It is rude though. And part of the unwritten code. |
Agree |
I just planted a front yard garden. Please don't let your dog pee or poop on other people's plants, flowers or trees! |
Don't agree at all. Just because you have a 6 foot leash doesn't mean that it should be allowed to walk 6 feet onto my property to take a dump. You should have control of your dog. As for birds taking a crap on my car, that's completely different. The birds are wild, they are not on a leash. If they were pet birds and you put one on my car to take a crap, then yes, I would complain. |
This entire post is about pee not poop. For poop, you pick it up. |
Dog pee kills my shrubs. There is grass between the sidewalk & road on my street. I wish dog owners would encourage their dogs to go there instead. |
Still basically the same. Having a 6 foot leash doesn't mean that your dog should be walked 6 feet onto my property to take a pee. Control your dog! The bird situation is still the same. |
PP, when you and I use words like "should" and "can", we are using them with respect to a moral compass. Some people don't have that. They had really crappy parents who didn't install that moral compass in them. Therefore, they see the word "can" and they think "legally allowed" (maybe, although some don't even care about that), and they see the word "should" and they think "whatever is easier or best for me is what I should do". They will never get it. It's a lost cause. We either need to force our governments to mandate the moral behavior we want (and then enforce it), or we accept that entitled people are like wild animals and just can't be reasoned with. |
I am apparently crazy after reading this forum. I have a problem with the dog owners too who let there dog roam free. In the past I would get a couple of poops here and there but this year my lawn both the curb as well as main lawn has been treated like a toilet with people not picking up. I have a short temper so I make a scene when I catch people doing it. If I could go back in time I admit I should of handled it nicer but seriously some of these dog walkers are just so lazy. I think there will never be peace between dog walkers and property owners . Some dog walkers are just going to be lazy and some property owners are going to care. |
