Where are your kids Getting in?

^^ True, unless you have another hook.

MD gets so many apps from MCPS students, you are essentially competing against your own classmates.

Exactly. They don’t use the high school weighting. They use their own.

Well I have yet to see any student under a 4.0 get into UMCP this year on college confidential unless their weighted was above 4.0. I highly doubt the kids admitted here are smarter than these top schools with lower GPA averages. Something doesn’t add up here.

Looking at average GPA here:

UMCP 4.3

Penn 3.9
Brown 4.0
UC Berkeley 3.8
Harvard 4.1
UMich 3.8
MIT 4.1
Wisc 3.8
Notre Dame 4.0
BU 3.6
Georgetown 4.0
USC 3.7
Williams 4.0
UVA 4.1

So you’re saying that the GPA of kids admitted to Maryland is higher than that of kids admitted to Harvard, Penn, MIT, Brown, Williams, etc? That is so delusional that it straddles the line between funny and scary

Some schools list UW GPA in what they release, others weighted. Impossible to know from the CDS because they don’t specify b

You can search for admitted student profiles on most schools and find more accurate GPA.

UC Berkeley https://admissions.berkeley.edu/student-profile 3.92 UW/4.45 W
Harvard https://features.thecrimson.com/2018/freshman-survey/makeup-narrative/ 3.90 UW

My private school kid just got into UMD-CP Honors College. No weighting.

And what was his GPA and scores?

I am not going to out him, but they are good.

Not true, especially when you have listed all the schools they applied to, gender, private vs public, sport etc.

Sorry, but they should be more loyal to their kid than these readers.

No one cares about your kid.

I care about my kid and can absolutely guarantee parents from the school read DCUM (I see posts) and would id my kid in a hearbeat if I posted bc of clearly identifying details. Not gonna' do that to my kid. However, I agree that many of these posts will not out a kid and are interesting to read.

Good luck to everyone!

That is exactly what Prep Scholar says for all of these GPA’s. Just verified them all. Only ones higher are a few UC’s which specifically state they DO count and use weighted grades 10th and 11th grade. But they at least, as a state, cap OOS enrollment to 15% and have at least 6 state schools worth applying to.

This clearly benefits high schools with massive AP offerings, or counties like MCPS that give full whole points increases to honors courses and AP courses. Not to mention their inflated grading scale. For schools that don’t offer a lot of AP’s or don’t curve an A and a B into an automatic A, it is very tough to compete. Don’t take it personally. Every college shows what they are looking for when you look on college confidential. You can see exactly where large schools took the first cuts. What matters to them. It pays to skim thru the forum for sure.

You just REALLY need to do your HW and find the schools that benefit your school’s grading, how much they truly look at all aspects of your application, and rank standardized test scores. Where your kid shines and the school appreciates that, is the schools you apply to.

Same with scholarships, merit, and honors colleges. Look at ALL the details. Is it holistic, is it a scale, do they look at leadership, rigor, etc... Ohio State’s only full tuition scholarships for OOS is the Morell. It has nothing to do with GPA or testing. Only leadership and diversity. So do your HW early. Finding the right matches, not the right names. Time really slips away senior year.

OH and any rolling admissions. Apply in the summer. More likely to get accepted and with a high merit package.

MD does not just look at weighted GPA's. That's just not true.

But a WGPA under 4.0 would not look good coming from an MCPS school.

But there are more public school districts and private schools in MD that do NOT weigh GPA’s the way MCPS do. And an unweighted GPA below a 4.0 with no or limited weighted offerings at that school, pretty much get tossed. And there is no way MD could have an average GPA that high unless they took weight into consideration. For the average to be 4.3 there would have to be so many kids with a 5.0 for a student with a 3.7 UWGPA to even get looked at. But that doesn’t happen so it is obvious the kids with only UW GPA or schools with no AP’s are getting overlooked.

Small private school, got into Honors College. It’s a limited universe of people.
