Obviously, MCPS can't do it based on race. Hence, "peer cohort" and removing WJ cluster from Barnsely. |
So how exactly does peer cohort equate to race for CES admissions in places like Cold Spring? ![]() |
Yes, the people posting this are delusional. The feeders to the various regional CES like Cold Spring are fairly homogeneous so peer cohort has little if any impact. As an early poster explained, it's not like Chevy Chase kids are competing against Langley Park. |
Although Peer Cohort is used in the CES, the impact as it relates to FARM, ESL is significant less as compared to how it plays in the selection process of the middle school magnet. As the previous poster said, the clusters at the elementary school level is still quite homogeneous. When you get to the middle school level, you have kids in Potomac/Bethesda and Silver Spring in the same pool for admissions. |
Yep, the middle school magnet has very different student demographics in 7th grade vs 6th, at least for tpms. |
I'm genuinely curious about this. Where did you get this info? Can you provide a link? |
Oh oh, you got me with the one CES that is full of Asian students, a school that is super tiny. Why did they move WJ cluster out of Barnsely? |
I don't know if some people believe there was a demographic reason to move WJ out of Barnsley. We were told it was because when Silver Creek MS opened, CCES lost their 6th grade, so they had additional space. Because CCES had additional classroom space, it made sense to add WJ (and a third CES classroom) to CCES. I don't believe that the Barnsley CES was reduced in number of classrooms, so effectively it does mean more spaces for students from the clusters Barnsley still serves. |
At CES level, MCPS has been adding seats, which is a great thing. They have added classes and home school CES centers. You can take a look at their roadmap of expansion. I hope this year they could further expand the cold spring and chevy chase center, which historically require higher scores to get in. |
These are MCPS numbers that were used in the magnet selection process |
Per the At A Glance, CCES 2016-17 - 4th grade 159 students 2016-17 - 5th grade 164 students 2017-18 - 4th grade 166 students 2017-18 - 5th grade 152 students I believe the WJ change happened last year. Did they really add an extra CES class even though the size of the 4th/5th grade CES doesn't seem to have changed much or did they allow in more students in the serving clusters? |
This is a good point. Cold Spring has been under capacity for years. There is more than 100 spaces available there. Why didn't they create another CES class for CS like they did with CC if per what the PP stated is true, that the extra space allowed for another CES class at CC? |
The 2018-2019 4th grade is the first CCES CES class to have 3 classrooms. The 5th grade still has 2 classrooms. Next year both the 4th and 5th grade CES will have 3 classrooms. So the expansion is not reflected in your 2017-2018 numbers. 2017-2018 was the first year with no 6th grade but they didn’t add to the CES and switch WJ until this year (they made/announced the decision before evaluating last year’s 3rd graders, so that happened in the 2017-2018 school year, but the kids weren’t in the school that year) |
We were told the realignment had to do with overall efforts to increase diversity across MCPS. |
WJ change happened with universal screening. 2018-2019 |
