UVA in-state v. Davidson v. Washington and Lee

Do NoVA UVA students really run into HS classmates all the time? Isn’t there a high # of OOS? Does it feel like an international, global school or does it truly feel like “13th grade”?

No, not at all. Only two from my DC's school went. She never sees the other student. She also doesn't see anyone she knows from NoVA and I do ask. There are 23,000 students there. MyDC made lots of friends before showing up on the facebook page started by accepted students. The night we dropped her off, she met up with 15 or so who had connected that way. Also found a roommate that way. There are 300+ clubs so there is something for everyone. And no, she's never stepped into a sorority or fraternity. You can exclude that completely from your life if you want. I don't know where the 13th grade bitter comment came from but that certainly has not been our experience. And as to class size, we've been pleased. Some of the intro classes first year were large but had good TAs. However, the professors have really reached out to DC. She has two superb (IMHO) letters of recommendation already as a second year that she is using right now to get internships in D.C. Plus professors have already linked her into some programs in her field of interest.

Here's some stats for the recent round of RD decisions. 67% Virginians (California is going to 80% instate). 35% URM. Lots of international students. 10% first generation. etc. When you hear someone saying they will be down there with 200 from their class, remember that is impossible inasmuch as even Langley and McLean don't get more than 40 accepted and many of those go Ivy or SLAC. TJ is the only school that gets a substantial number of its graduates into UVA and they too often go Ivy or Cal Tech, GA Tech, etc. so the yield from TJ is not the same as the top publics. There is a lot of bitterness on this board because it has gotten so difficult to get into UVA and W&M from NoVA, which is entirely understandable. That's why California is increasing its proportion of resident students to 80%. It will be interesting to see if VA follows suit. https://news.virginia.edu/content/uva-releases-admissions-decisions-and-uva22-begins-trending-grounds

My DD is a first year at UVA, and about 30 kids in her graduating class are at the school, too. She says that she hasn't seen the majority of them at all since starting. There's a few that she runs into occasionally, and one or two that happen to live in her building. But she really doesn't see any of them!

Yes, there's a pretty good number of OOS students. A lot of her friends are from places all of the country, and the world. She's told me of friends from Kenya, Ethiopia, England, and Australia. 4 girls that live on her floor are from China and South Korea. She's goes to a lot of events put on by the International Residential College and by other global groups, and it sounds like she's met some truly remarkable people from many different backgrounds. She's even really enjoyed meeting and hearing about the experiences of friends from other parts of Virginia like SW VA and Virginia Beach.

It's 70% in-state so of course it's going to have a far more regional feel than a top 20 private....how could it not? And as much as UVA parents want to believe that it's a school with international pedigree it simply isn't It's a fine state school but go into it with realistic expectations about diversity.

30 from her school, then same from Oakton, Madison, Chantilly, Centerville, Woodson -- what's the difference? Oh, and a couple of kids this year from right in our immediate neighborhood. I think it would be refreshing for DC to get away from these types for a change.

All three schools have zero impactful alumni. Kind of blah.

What? Okay, so that's roughly 150 students from your area. There are 16,000 undergrads at the school. Unless your kid actively seeks to do so, they won't stick with their same old NOVA friends.

well if 70% of the student's are from in-state, what percent are from NoVA high schools? 35%? 40%? You can't swing a dead cat down there without hitting a kid from one of the NoVA high schools.

So what does that portend? Same old competitive rat-race as we've endured since 7th grade. That's what.

...but YOU are having an impactful life to the degree that you feel you can make such sweeping generalizations?? LOL

They just aren't the kind of schools that attract dynamic, exciting people.

No, it's 57% in-state. And only a few students (depending on size) from a fellow classmate's school show up. My DC knew four. He never sees them. The only school that sends a large (50 or so) contingent is TJ.

Where do you get 57% for undergrad admissions? Everything I see said 69% for 2016=17, and 67% for this year.
