Why do I see a new version of that famous NYer cartoon when I read these posts? The one with Manhattan clearly detailed and then blank space for the rest of the country with the outline of the West Coast at the end? In this version (the education one), one views a cluster of 3 private school campuses in DC and another cluster in New England with the rest of the country blank..... |
FYI, on may 'top Ivy bound' lists, schools like TJ, Potomac, & Sidwell lead an impressive group--FAR above the Exeters, Andovers, Choates.... |
NYer cartoon, maybe. Back in Junior High with the catty Queen Bees, definitely......... |
Because you're not thinking contextually. Yeah, the NE cluster may be regionally chauvinistic, but it's a local vs. national HS debate happening in DC. Not a debate about which locale in the US has the best private day schools or public magnet programs. That's just not a question with practical relevance. |
Correct. Also, on diversity, per www.BoardingSchoolReview.com, Exeter is 20% minority enrollment, and Andover is at 37%. Not very different from most of the local private schools. |
I have to agree that I love the Daughters of the Confederacy Tea Party reference. Funniest thing I read all morning! Several of the moms at my school look like that is the type of event that they are on their way to after dropping off the kids. Hee haw! |
I suppose there's also the problem that Exeter/Andover are 9-12 (plus post-12 finishing) schools. I think many of the people in this discussion are talking about lower grades. |
So will all you Moms who appreciate the reference 'fess up re where your DCs go to school? I can't believe that this is universal among local privates. Though I'm certainly willing to believe it exists at some. |
I have a child in HS. He's been in 2 top VA private schools and I have never heard of this reference nor seen anything similar to what a pp has described.
I am just shocked and stunned that there are posters here decrying the lack of diversity, yet in the same breath, make broad sweeping generalizations about other women they do not know based upon the visual appearance. If this is not hypocritical, I don't know what is. |
I think issue of whether Exeter/Andover offer comparable academics was addressed on another thread when someone (perhaps same person as here?) insisted that no one should spend time worrying about DC private schools because they're clearly just vo-tech programs compared to Exeter/Andover: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/90/65965.page. |
AA parent at St Albans here and I find that the Daughters of the Confederacy Tea Party reference is right on the money. Can't wait for this year's Christmas House Tour or the next invite to a mom's lunch at some SAHM's home in the 'burbs during the work day. |
Ditto for Landon!!!! Never seen so much Lilly Pulitzer in my life!!! |
This post made me curious, as we are at a Cathedral school so I was wondering if there is any truth to this post. My child's class is about 28% diverse - meaning race and/or religious diversity (by religion I am considering diverse as being non christian). I think that is pretty good. Honestly, though, for me the best part of it all is that I to date have never heard my child differentiate his friends or classmates by their color or religion or race. They are just his friends and classmates. He has an asian friend and i don't think he even notices that his friend is asian. Never mentioned it to me or asked me about it. Too bad adults weren't more like that! Wouldn't it be a better world? |
Double super ditto for NCS. Daughters of the Confederacy Tea Party all the way here. |
I find many of these latter posts to be disingenuine and posted by one person. |
