Trump announces policy banning transgender military service

Military service is not about you.

Republicans and their supporters have made it all about trans soldiers.

I have seen countless posts here denigrating service members, and how greedy and attention seeking they are.

But the most costly and oooh look at me I am so patriotic service members, trans, are applauded and pushed forward to cheers and drools of joy.

Transparent and disgusting.

Fixed that for you. Trans people just want to be left alone. Why can't Republicans stop talking about them and legislating against them? Let them do their job in peace.

Also, you seem to be gunning for a gold medal in the Martyr Olympics. USA! USA!

Trans are not about being left alone. Big time attention whores.

I think you are right. Let's follow Mike Pence's lead and provide electro-shock therapy to see if we can get their minds right.

No one is saying they can't be transgendered. We are saying the taxpayers should not pay for the surgeries.

That isn't what the President is proposing. He is willfully removing thousands of active patriots (something he never did) from service. It has nothing to do with surgeries and everything to do with hate and fear-mongering.

Thousands?? So now there are thousands of transgendered persons in the military. Lol

2014 https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/research/military-related/us-transgender-military-service/

The same "Williams Institute" did a study and found that 0.3% of the 340 million Americans are Transgender. That is 102,000 and according to the PP they all are in the military. LOL!

Where did you pull that from. The numbers I have seen are 10,000-15,000. My husband has one in his reserve unit. He says it is no big deal.

My active duty son says it's a huge deal.

Asthma = can't serve

Trans = can serve.

I'm not sure I understand what your son's beef is. He has asthma but can't serve, and he's piqued that someone who has what he perceives to be a more deleterious medical problem is allowed to? Or is this a moral thing he's saying? It's a strange comparison.

Dear clueless, ppl with asthma are disqualified from service due to medical issues.

Trans, who have infinitely more medical issues, can serve.

My son serves. Currently deployed.

What are their medical issues? This decision by Trump would ALSO kick out any trans person who has also completed the transition process. In fact, I'd say the vast majority have already transitioned. That phase of their life is over.

What about women and their medical issues? Mentally ill soldiers? All of them can serve, yet you're not going on about their medical issues.

You're intolerance is showing.

A person with asthma has a physical condition that may limit his/her ability to function in a combat setting.

A person who is transgender and has no physical illnesses or limitations can serve perfectly well in combat.

Were I on the battlefield, I'd rather have an able-bodied transgendered person fighting alongside me than an asthmatic man or woman.

If a trans person has completed their transition, what medical issues do they have? They take hormones, but so do plenty of non-trans people. They're cheap and don't require much medical supervision.

There's a twitter thread here from an Iraqi vet--amputee. Worth reading. Explains the issue.

thank you for posting. fascinating. This is exactly why I read this forum - so that I can learn where both sides of an issue are coming from.

How about serve on an actual battlefield before speaking? At not as a DC pog?

People with medical and mental issues are not allowed to enlist or commission.

Trans, who have both, should not be allowed to do so. Trump is doing the right thing.

Readiness Is #1.

Except for idiot Americans who don't give a fig about actual readiness.

What "infinitely more medical issues" do you mean, outside of the one that homophobes are so freaked out by - the reassignment surgery

You who are supporting this move are to the right of Orrin Hatch. Orrin Hatch!

There are no mental issues associated with being trans. There are mental issues being a bigot.

Infinitely more medical and mental issues.

Trans surgery does not "fix" trans people. They still commit suicide at higher rates than the non trans population.

Just what high stress high tempo jobs need!
Anonymous
Respondents — which included people across the gender spectrum, including trans, non-binary, gender fluid, two-spirit and agender — reported sharp differences in mental health from the general population. Fully 40 percent of respondents said they had attempted suicide in their lifetime — nine times the general population's 4.6 percent rate. And 39 percent of respondents reported "serious psychological distress" in the month before submitting to the survey, about six times that of the general population.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/rundown/largest-ever-survey-trans-adults

The battlefield needs suicidal and mentally distressed military. PERFECT!

Wait, wut?? NP here. Women can't serve?

And there are absolutely soldiers with mental illness serving. Persons with ADHD can serve if they aren't on medications. Persons with anxiety, depression, suicidal ideations, etc, are generally "disqualified" from serving but that's only at the outset. Also behavioral issues like Intermittent Explosive Disorder - all only disqualifying if diagnosed and identified at the outset. The military dose a crappy job of screening, based on research that has been conducted.

Do you know the rates of anxiety, depression, suicidal behavior including death by suicide, PTSD, IED, in the current, active military? Studies have estimated 12-15% of deployed military have major depression. Other research has shown upwards of 25% of active military with a mental health issue, HALF of whom had such before they joined.

Your statements seem vague and based in prejudice instead of science, plus run counter to what experts have recommended. Doesn't seem like that's a good basis for policy though I'm sure there are some active Facebook groups where your opinions would be validated.
