I don't think people are claiming white-victimhood, quite the contrary. Do they rise? or do they simply try to shame the team spiking the football after going up yet another TD, talking about "sportsmanship" when they should be talking TDs. Policies have shifted, definitions have shifted and a few have risen out when willing to play the game but I ask what exactly has changed in America since the 1870s? And if you think that there is some massive demographic shift happening that is a harbinger to a truer change, one could argue that there has more or less always been more Africans, Latinos and Natives in this country than white people (if they were counted that is another story) so I am not even sure what you expect to happen. The resolve, pride, heritage and 3$ will buy someone only a cup of coffee. And a free role of papertowels if you are Puerto Rican and in need, all the back end is same old same old. |
Same here. I'm in Burtonsville. White families in my neighborhood are dying out (literally) and the younger families with kids tend to go private.the demographics of my area have changed dramatically. |
Look into the history of Fairfax County sometime Nearly half of the inner burbs have experienced white flight now European poster hit the nail on the head. Core cities are where the rich are and the inner burbs are decaying. Contrary to popular belief edge cities are the fastest growing and are populated mainly by millennial of all races who can't afford the core city and are skipping over inner suburbs |
Another anecdote: White ppl in the FFX county planned subdivision I grew up in are being replaced by Indians, Asians, and Africans. The whites that remain in the region tend move farther out and their kids, if they remain in the area, live closer in, DC, Arlington, or closer-in FFX. I think the US saw White flight because when the national highway system developed and coincided with school desegregation, the cost in terms of time to move to the burbs was minimal and there were perceived serious risks of staying in the city. Overpopulation in the burbs and resulting traffic has made living far out costly and current generations a bit less deterred by fact their kid will be in school with poor blacks. This has led to reurbanization but I think the appeal of the city and its closeness to job centers, walkability thanks to being build mostly before the car, etc., is more limited in the US vs. Europe because we've concentrated our underclass in the cities and continue to do so through massive subsidies. |
| I can’t help but think that all the fear I hear on this board can be allayed by people just mixing more, even intermarrying. It’s happening, Which gives me hope. I think people of similar income backgrounds and education get along well regardless of race or even religion. You have a lot more in common with your neighbors than you think. Even your fear of each other is somewhat mutual. Someone has to break the ice, ask the other to the dance. “Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together try to love one another right now.” |
Sadly this doesn't seem to be human nature. I think you could take 100 random people and put them on a desert island and in 10 years there'd be the hill tribe and the valley tribe and they would be fighting. ? |

It is funny how many of you think there is white flight going on in the burbs because you see brown people. White people are not flying away. Immigrants, especially asians are moving up the socioeconomic ladder (in Loudoun county they are the highest wage earners of all races) brown people like myself want good schools and dont want our kids exposed to the underbelly of America which is just like the 3rd woeld, but with more violence and more drugs.
Brown people like me go to where the best opportunity for our kids are. You Americans just see brown people and sit in your city and say "see I told you so, the whites are fleeing and the browns are taking over". You are just ignorant. I don't want to live in DC or Arlington and send my kids to your sh!t schools or fork over 40k/yr per kid for a private school when I can just live somewhere with great public schools, surrounded by families with the same values. My parents didnt come here doe me to squander opportunity for myself and future generations. Nor for me to treat my kids like a grand social experiment and send them to a mixed SES school and hope att the major social problems our country has dont influence my kids. |
This totally. I'm a brown person living in the faraway burbs of Clarksburg, MD, one reason being the schools. I hate to say it though but I do think white people, whether subconsciously or not, do tend to avoid neighborhoods that have a large number of brown people. So though they may not be moving out.. they aren't moving in. |
| There’s a difference between the way VA suburbs white people are racist about Indian/Asian immigrants/2nd and 3rd gen and the way they are racist about black or Hispanic people. |
It’s ok, I live in PG County and I wouldn’t move to wherever you live. I am not afraid of poor people or brown people and amazingly my children do not melt upon contact with “the Poors.” |
And this makes it ok? |
I'm brown and my spouse is brown and we are both professionals with graduate degrees. our jobs are downtown. We would consider it a form of child abuse if we spent 2x2x90 minutes a day commuting. Our kids doing just fine in DCPS elementary and we can afford DC private when we approach middle school. |
Good that you chose what was best for you. Lots of us like yourself (professionals with a degree) have jobs in the suburbs so no need to be close to DC. No child abuse happening. |
Except Howard is the Fairfax of Baltimore.... |
I've heard Child Protective Services sets the benchmark at 110 minutes, so you'd be ok. If you're commuting an hour and 50 minutes though, expect a home visit and reevaluation of your parental rights.
