Maryland license plate vigilantes

She was interested in having her child attend and immediately said that she was from DC, her family lived in DC and she'd use that address. She didn't think twice about it; she really considers herself a resident of DC even though she doesn't actually live there. It's the idea of an ancestral home-- she's "from" DC which equates to being able to access services in DC.

The old Ward 9 tie....

WTF would walls, which turns away DC kids, have students from Maryland?.

1. Most children attending DC public schools live in single parent/divorced parent/multiple guardianship homes. The other parent does not have to live in DC, and has a right to take their kid to school.

2. At my school we have at least 30-40 active families in the foster care system. DC does not have enough foster or group homes, meaning that temporary care providers may live in Maryland or VA. The children are Wards of DC Govt, and therefore have a right to attend a DC public school.

3. Taking pics of kids going to school is super creepy.

"That's right, Byron. Even if a few pedophiles fall through the cracks: how can that compare to the scourge of a child living with their aunt--"

"I'm sorry, Cindy, the correct term is 'Auntie.'"

"Oh?" (Long pause.) "Well in any case, what's important here are the children. Why won't anyone think of the children?"

"I completely agree. And who better than to look after their best interests than the unemployed mother with a cell phone camera?"

"Completely.. It's women like that who kept the Japanese and German spies at bay, during the War."

Haha love it

Good question.

All I can imagine is they were DC residents when admitted and then moved?

"Weren't we talking about residency cheaters, Byron? Did you know they are stealing tax dollars from our District, just by their very existence?"

"They are? How shocking! I have never heard that before!"

"Then you haven't been paying attention! And if brave citizens like you don't take a stand against three year olds in foster care, or with noncustodial parents with cars, who will?"

"Well, Cindy, I have a great idea!"

"We desperately, need ideas, Byron. There's only so much a mother with a cell phone camera can do."

"We should close the borders. Big a build wall--"

I generally agree, although the first point is misleading. Single parents account for many households in DC but divorced parents a smaller percentage.

"Cindy, I'm here right now with Leandra and Larla, in front of Brent Elementary, which, as you may be aware, is a school in Washington, DC."

"Oh, but is it really, Byron?"

"I'm sorry, Cindy. But yes, yes it is."

"Okay. But what does this have to do with your husband and the Mayflower hotel?"

"Absolutely nothing! Why are you obsessed with my husband?"

"Have you seen him?"

"Hrm, I see your point. Leandra, what do you think?"

"Byron, I have to agree your husband is hot, but my point is, I was thinking about moving to DC, and so I asked my co-worker about schools. The next thing I know, she's posting a long, involved email to our human resources department accusing me of residency fraud."

"And what did you do then, Leandra?"

"Honestly, Byron, what can one do when someone is batshit? I sighed, and looked away."

If not, the school (hopefully) will act against them and require payment of tuition or remove the student. The system needs our help to work efficiently.

All the haters posting here have nothing to fear if their excuses are legitimate.

But none of that happens if people are too lazy/scared to report potential cheaters. It's sort of like what Jeff tells us here: He doesn't have time to police every post, so the DCUM community needs to report suspicious posts to flag them for his attention.

Keep doing your part to help DCPS/OSSE do its job effectively!

I completely agree. So bizarre how people jump to defend cheaters on both residency for schools and now vehicles, too? Integrity, anyone?

Completely disagree. No defending here. I think if you have a legitimate reason for out of state tags then you can document NBD. HOWEVER, it's super creepy to take pictures and serves no purpose. What is OSSE going to do with a picture of a random kid they can't identify?? It's a waste of time and energy and its out of bounds.

In my opinion, the sheer number of cars with MD plates that occupy drop off and pick up at schools in NE And SE DC indicate there is a problem...and please spare me the military and foster kid speech.

Who are you responding to?! I'm all for reporting and agree it's a problem. I'm simply saying taking pictures of kids doesn't serve any purpose (and it's creepy). If you know the kid's name report them.
