Gotta love how Texas handles terrorism . That's the blueprint. |
I have zero doubt that the cartoonists and people who consider what the Texas cartoonists did as "admirable" would themselves be among the first to be outraged by things like "Piss Jesus" |
Yes make sure every cracked pot has a gun. |
They had 20 swap team members with government bought kit providing security for for 200 people. 10k is very cheap. It does raise questions as to why the unarmed security guard was placed where he was. In Texas why was a security guard unarmed in a police car? |
Agreed, and while it is constitutionally protected, I don't think that piece of art is admirable. |
They are certainly asking me to "bow down" in the sense that they want me to treat Muhammed like he was someone godlike, rather than just another goofy guy. And I am certainly not offending a billion Muslims. First, there are some Muslims who do not follow the prohibition against graven images. And there are many other Muslims who recognize that non-believers do not need to follow Muslim law. |
Those billion peaceful Muslims have many countries with intolerant Sharia laws where they can ban freedom of expression and supress religious freedom (or freedom from religion - ie atheism which is not uncommon in the west). America isn't one of those places. One of our founding principles is tolerance - including peaceful tolerance of things you personally find "offensive." The fact that "one billion peaceful Muslims are offended" is completely irrelevant to the question of our founding principles; our fundamental rights are more important than one religion's opinion or offense. As long as you disagree in a peaceful lawful manner, you are within your rights to do so; in fact I encourage that (it's the American way). But the second you resort to violence or urge others to do so, we will punish you to the fullest extent of our laws (as you will soon see in the Boston marathon case). If you are still struggling with the concept of religious tolerance, I yet again invite you to move someplace less tolerant. But do not mess with our founding principles. I love this country; I love what we stand for; and I'm willing to put my life on the line to defend America, just like most Americans. Let's roll. |
Nonsense. Most of the Texas cartoonists are anti-religion with no love for Jesus. Second, whereas placing a statue of Jesus in urine shows contempt for Jesus, drawing a picture of Muhammed is merely a doctrinal difference on whether it is proper to display an image of the Prophet. Many of the cartoons have a theme of Muhammed crying at the violence that a few Muslim commit in his name. I think most Muslims would agree with this sentiment. |
Whether it's burning American flags or burning Korans, or our taxpayer-funded NEA paying an artist to create "art" he named "Piss Christ" the issue isn't what offense someone takes.
The issue is freedom of expression. On that freedom, every American can agree. Freedom of expression is our right, as protected by our constitution, the bill of rights, and our law. End of story. Deal with it. |
Where did you get that information? The winning cartoonist might be (I think he traveled in for the event, right?), but I've seen nothing of the sort and I am local to the event. It would be pretty unusual in TX for a majority to be anti-religion, and this group tends to attract somewhat religious people. Why do you believe most of the cartoonists competing were anti-religion? |
Couldn't they have organized something educational like
"this as a map of the world and that's where America is situated". I'm surprised they got people to an even that doesn't concern them at all. Must have been some promise of bad guys showing up. |
Since its repeatedly coming up in this thread, here is the Wiki page of the 1987 work of art "Piss Christ."
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piss_Christ You don't have to like it, or even consider it art. But no one can disagree that the artist has a right to express himself in America by creating and publically displaying "Piss Christ,"; just as every American has the right to burn Korans or American flags. |
Excellent!! Agree. Let the wisdom of Dr. King rule the day. |
Huh? Art doesn't concern artists? Cartoons don't concern cartoonists? |
This was not a local event. It was sponsored by the New York based American Freedom Defense Initiative, and Dutch politician Geert Wilders was the featured speaker. They just happened to have the meeting in Garland Texas, and most attendees traveled there. |
