Same reasons we don't have state medicine and government pensions here, or 50-60% taxes. It's a wild west here. Don't have kids if you can't make enough to support them (including daycare).

What about people who lived in lower COLAs and have to move here for work? Should they just put down their existing kids?

two in preschool in old town , $3200/month -ouch!

I do not understand thevargument that you should not have kids if you do not make enough money. Two working parents, or even one working parent, should get by with a child, or two.
What is so outrageous about that? The argument that they should leave the area if they do not make enough money is also stupid

I use home daycare (almost always cheaper) and pay 400/week (200 per kid). But she gives me a discount because my husband and I are teachers. Her standard rate is 265/week/kid. In two years daycare will be done and I will only need before school care for about 400/month. I'll be very excited to have that money back on my pocket.

We pay $1200 for a full-day preschool in Falls Church City, meals included. It's a very good deal. I am shocked at the cost of infant daycare in DC - it's not even very good but paying two grand for the privilege is insane.

$490/week for nanny share for 1 child (22 months) and 45 hours/week, near Courthouse. Share has 1 other child, same age, and we pay all taxes (it's $415/week before taxes). We were on waiting lists for three daycare centers (never got into any of them) and they ranged from $1850-$2000/mo for infant care.

$1290 for day care three days a week at a day care center in Potomac. My mom watches our son the other two days.

1850/month for two kids. One in preschool and one infant.

$1000 month for one baby. Family member watches her full time.

About $70 a month for afterschool for K student at school.

We definitely would have done that if DH and I were both working FT. Instead, I became a SAHM and had our two kids very close together to minimize my time out of the workplace (I originally planned to go back when #2 was 3 but the SAHM life was working well for us so I didn't go back until she was in K)

Two in a home daycare. $250/week per child so $2000-$2500 a month, depending on the number of weeks. This is in Falls Church
